As many of you know, I’ve been one sick little trooper and I’ve been off the water since the last Saturday in March. Long time! This AM I snuck out for a few hours to see what the body could tolerate and I was granted a bit of luck.

I started out pitching shallow to the little flooded timber I could find…. which isn’t much with the lower water we have this spring. I was throwing a ringworm, purple body/white tail, which happens to be one of my favorites this time of year, on a 1/8 ounce jig head. Mostly poking around enjoying being back on the river.

I made a pitch up into about 2′ of water and had a real sound “whapp” on my ringworm and set the hook. In retrospect, I can’t believe the fish never disturbed the surface of the water given how shallow the fish was laying and how fast it came off the shoreline after I stuck the hook home.

Here’s the pics. Let’s just say, they don’t get much bigger in these parts….

A big thanks goes out to my 6# Solar mono line!!

We released this ol’ girl in good health after these photos.

Well, us walleye guys are poorly equipped to measure pike. My board stops at 30″ and I really didn’t want to damage the slime coat by laying it down to mark the nose and tail for a tape measure job later on. Sooo no length. We did weigh it. 20+.

Dandy fish, something tells me that your’re feeling quite a bit better after today. What kind of illness do you have to get to catch a monster like that? lol

Pneaumonia. No, its not worth it in the least. The pike made me smile wide but I’m still hacking and sputtering. I’d trade that pike for a set of cleared up lungs any day.

Now, a 14# walleye might be a different story all together…LOL

    WHOLLY CRAP !!!!!

    That fish is HUGE !!!

I believe that you catch as good as you are, and you cach as sick as you get.So the 14# eye is right aroung the next bend. You get back out of life what you put into it and you get rewarded for the time your down.

get well / take care and i hope to see you on the water soon.

I’ll try again lost my first attempt at a response to the picture of James pike. Don’t over do it James!!!!! Remember I have you booked for a day next week. It is hard to type a response as all I can think about is the great trips I have had for Pike up in Canada.

Nothing finer than a twenty – thirty minute fight on lite tackle. Congrats, as usual a job well done and see you soon

BIG GRINS!!! My second favorite “game” fish even!!! How long did it take a winded soul to land that PIG on 6# test?

That’s not a Pig—It’s a Horse!!! Nice fish James! Makes you wonder what is swimming around out there in the old Miss. Does anyone know of someone who actually targets these big pike on a regular basis? Would be interesting to know their (big pike) habits, seasonal locations, etc. Wow, think of the possibilities, especially on a CPR basis.

LOL. This is the biggest River Pike Ive ever seen. I thought the one I caught in the fall of 2000 was big (picture in ftr photo album). It went 40 inches and 20 lbs but this girl would kick that one’s tail! I bet she pushes 25 or better!

Shoot me that pic in an e-mail and I’ll add it here. My guess is the file is larger than 100k and the server rejected it as a result.

    James:

I just sent you a private e. These guys that discredited the world record muskies used the relationship of the fish in the picture to try to identify parts of the body that could be measured. My measuements from the top of my kneecaps to the top of my shoulder is in the 40″ to 42″ range considering I couldn’t crank my head around to get the best view ( I am 6’2″). It looks like it has incredible girth (how lbs of eggs?) Was the fishes weight just over twenty or much over twenty. My first fish over 40″ used with the formula length x girth x girth / 800 (42*19*19/800=19lbs) In most discussions with persons (written in mags) using this formula with really massive dimensions bears further discussion not needed here. The fish looks girthy enough that the length could be shorter with an increase in the girth measurement. Nonetheless nice fish and glad to hear you’re getting back at it.

    I’ve always used

    (length^3)/3500

for a 42″ fish, that puts it just over 21. Seems right.

    Great fish.

Fun, fun, fun…Great job on 6lb test. That is not just a “great northern” on the river, that is a pig even up in my neck of the woods…heck…even in Canada. They are a great fighting fish out of shallow water. Glad your back on your feet. Sorry I missed you again as I was down with Reef Runner again this Fri, Sat and Sun.

Very nice Pike James, SO you DO catch fish other than Walleye and Smallies. The Ol’ Miss just keeps on surprizing. Hope to see you out there more often and hope you have been feeling better. Jack.
