Looking at my river maps I often see the designation “closing dam” particularily in back water areas… can anyone offer an explanation as to what these are? What is there function? Can they a hazard to navigation in the same sense a wind dam can be??? More importantly…is this a fish holding structure???

a closing dam is basically a wingdam thats been placed across a channel that leads away from the river.. they are supposed to keep the majority of the current in the main channel… and YES they can hold fish… and in fact are very easy to troll with cranks and long lines…. there was a time when ALL I did in the summers was troll closing dams cuz they are much easier to work than wing dams….. and they hold plenty of fish….. and yes… SOME of them are navigation hazards… just like wingdams they are at various depths… I like the ones that are 4′-8′ under water…. they seem to hold the best fish…..
