I believe the fish you have there is a Trout-Perch. They are not technically a member of the minnow family, but are fairly common in Minnesota lakes and rivers. I have included an excerpt from an e-mail I sent to BK last week when he asked me to identify a Trout-Perch for a friend.
I attached a picture taken by John Lyons of WI that shows the fish a bit better.
“The fish in the picture is called a trout perch (if you look close you will see a small adipose (fatty) fin behind the dorsal just like trout and catfish have). They are a pretty common species in the river here and elsewhere across the state. They are often mistaken for young Walleyes or Sauger on Lake of the Woods where the frequently have die offs after spawning in June. Interestingly on Lake of the Woods this is a primary forage species for the Sauger population but it was VERY rare to see one in the stomach of a Walleye. In Pool 4/Lake Pepin, we usually see them in deeper water while we are doing our trawl surveys in August though they are occasionally caught hook and line or seen in the shallows with seines or electrofishing.”
