Does anyone know if there is a way to get aerial photos of the Mississippi River before the dams were constructed?

There are a number of websites that have poor quality pics. Digital enhancement will help… I would check with a few historical societies

When I worked at UMESC (Upper Midwest Environmental Science Center) in LaCrosse I remember seeing a bunch of them from pools 7-10. I would try sending an email to the center director to see if they could put you in touch with whoever has them in archive.

Here is one sample at L&D3 centered in the photo

    From the

Minnesota Historical Aerial Photographs Online from the John R. Borchert Map Library

Looking at these, you are likely out of luck as most dam were built before the Aerial Photo’s

    Good picture Caroll.

All the white or lighter color is new including the Y island and the shore line going down to the Vermilion. The island is said to be made out the river sand that was excavated during the building of the dam.

76 years and many of the locations I would have expected to look changed, look the same as they did back in 1938.

Looked like there was a barg parked up the Trimbel, the wing dam in front of the Vermilion look much longer, the Cannon emptied below Evets Resort…but still most looks the same.
