Lock and Dam 8 to reopen March 17
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, announced that Lock and Dam 8, near Genoa, Wis., will reopen March 17.
The facility was originally scheduled to reopen March 10, but thick ice conditions indicate that navigation will not begin on the Upper Mississippi River soon, allowing work crews more time to complete scheduled maintenance.
The lock and dam was closed for renovation and maintenance Dec. 2, 2013. During the closure, the lock is dewatered to perform the work. Scheduled maintenance includes repairing concrete; repairing, sandblasting and painting the miter gates and replacing the bubbler system.
The nearly 650 U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, employees working at more than 40 sites in five upper-Midwest states serve the American public in the areas of environmental enhancement, navigation, flood damage reduction, water and wetlands regulation, recreation sites and disaster response. Through the Corps’ Fiscal Year 2011 $175 million budget, nearly 2,800 non-Corps jobs were added to the regional economy as well as $271 million to the national economy.
