I know it’s not a river but I understand that Big Stone has a early opener because it’s a boundary water with S. Dakota. If any of you know of this or have fished Big Stone I would like to hear about it. Thanks.

It’s just as much a river as Lake Pepin!! (Wide spot in the Minnesota) The opener is April 27 and I’ll be there. The fish are always on a tear the first few weeks after opener.

Concentrate on the north 1/3 of the lake. Shallow shorelines are the best. There are miles of great looking shore structure to work over. Pitching Jigs or Cranks, Trolling, Corking all work great.

I like to use the SD state park to access the lake on the opener. Save yourself a 15 mile run up the lake from Ortonville. Pay the entry fee (like 5-8 bucks a day or a season pass for 20 something) They have excellent ramps and fish cleaning facilities. (I probably should not have posted that because the place is never crowded, busy yes, but not crowded)

    Rats!

I have to be at a D.U. banquet that day but thanks a lot for the info How is the bite into the summer? Thinking about taking an ailing Father he needs plenty of action but size isn’t important

I hit it during the first 3 weeks. After the Mn opener, I don’t get out there. The lake get’s a nasty algie bloom when the water warns up. Hit it early when the water is relatively clean.

    Good Luck.

We have a forum on “fish the lake” for Big Stone, even so, I have fished the Big Stone opener going on 6 years. We fish the islands on the south end and usually do real well. Last year we boated an 8+ pounder from 3′ of water and lots of 15″ to 19″ fish. Try that lake after dark, its a great lighted slip bobber lake. jon
