Figuring out forage

Still being fairly new to the river game, only a few years in now, its taken too long to figure out the forage base. My particular stretch of river(SAF pool) has very very low shad base, and most articles and other bits of knowledge are pretty stacked with imitating your bait to the shad. Well for a year and half of trying to force feed the fish shad imitator baits, which are extremely effective on pools south of here, and failing misersbly, had me rethinking. Then cutting open several walleyes late last fall and finding 2-3″ catfish/bullies in them really made me think. And seeing Tom S. post on his kitty imitator made me finally seek out a bait that might fit my pool a lil better.
These things are pretty cool I must say. No scent as far as I know, some tubes I got are salted. Case Plastics if curious. For now they are just another plastic in my box, but hopefully they come through this season for me like I think they will.

Spoke with several fisherman last year who said they had seen their first school of shad in the pool in years, as well as me, so maybe we can get a sustainable population and we can enjoy the benefits of them on coming years.

We used to use those as a willow cat imitator. I caught a few fish on them pitching to wing dams. Never nailed them on them, but didn’t spend a ton of time with them either.

    Good luck

I think half the craze of the new goby baits is just advertising, but these may fill that void in my plastic arsenal as well. The profile of them looks pretty darn close to a goby, sculpin too.

You fish the Mississippi more north right Bob? Its good to see they munch on them during the green tree season, I only noticed the pattern when the snow was on the ground, makes me look forward to spring.

Nick, that goby craze isn’t a marketing scheme when on the great lakes. Of my last 4 tournaments on erie, 3 top 20 finishes on gobies and 1 on gulp leeches. Gobies have a place!

Reading an article in some old In-fisherman mags that I acquired from Mr.Wiggum , some pros on there were saying the exact thing Randy. And the main point was that these baits are quite effective on other bodies of water that don’t have gobies, they are filling that niche of baits that represent the sculpin family, which are native to many waters, and when used properly can put the smack down.

Those madtom plastics you show are dynamite plastics on pool 4 right about now until the water begins to dirty up and rise. We just rigged one on a heavy jig and dropped it to the bottom then set the rod in a holder and took up about 2′ of line after the bottom was felt with the rod in the cradle. We just let the rig move along with us as we drifted or used the electric to position the boat. It didn’t take us long to figure out that the drag had to be set real loose. The hits were incredible.

I’ve had a couple really good days dragging them in the Root for smallies.

Found where the bullheads are for now, hopefully by opener they are still around. Haven’t had to much luck on these plastics in this post yet, but haven’t gave up on the idea.

Took a real good look at a bullie, then after the outing went to FF to find a bait that would imitate the best. These flickers are spot on, once season opens it’s on like donkeykong.

Anticipation is killing me at this point. woot
