I have an Abu-Garcia Ambassador baitcasting reel. I can’t remember the model number, it is the blue color. Can anyone recommend what type of line to use in it. I had trouble with 10# fireline.

What kind of trouble with the Fireline? Be sure to use a mono backer when using fireline.
April 4, 2002 at 5:16 pm #240397Even though I used a mono backer, the fireline would dig into itself and make a “valley” in the spool of line. Would Spiderline braid be better suited for this reel or should I go to mono. It seemed like the fireline wanted to stay in the spooled shape rather than straighten out when casting.
April 4, 2002 at 6:03 pm #240401I use Whiplash 80lb test on all of my bait casters. It’s awesome. I’ve used other super lines and had the problem you posted as well as others. No complaints about Whiplash.
April 4, 2002 at 7:37 pm #240410Doesn’t 80# line have adverse effects on the way your bait acts? Just wondering.
April 4, 2002 at 11:30 pm #240429You need to have more tension on the line when you are spooling your Fireline (any super line for that matter). I had a similar problem until someone suggested running the line through the center of a large phone book and then holding it tight in your rod hand above the reel when you are cranking it on…. Never a problem since and it seems like you can’t have too much tension on the line when loading it up.
BarcApril 5, 2002 at 12:02 am #240436Barc is right………I found this to be true of any line on a caster………….you have to spool it tight or you’ll cause a hitch in the performance. I’m not sure I understand the idea of the Fireline not wanting to straighten out??? Do you have the reel set up correctly for spool tension and braking? I use 14lb. Fireline on an Abu Garcia T 3600 C, which is much smaller than the model you describe and I can throw a variety of lure weights 30 – 40 yards consistantly and almost effortlessly, further if necessary without much challenge. I’ve never seen any form of a memory problem with Fireline, even in cooler weather, wet or dry. Make sure you’re setting your reel up correctly before putting a line to the test and let us know if that helps your performance any.
April 5, 2002 at 12:49 am #240450I’ve used everthing from spiderwire to fireline. Lures all seem to act the same for me when using Whiplash as compared to any of the others. The only reason I didn’t care for the others was the fact that the tend to fray after several trips. I’ve also noticed improved knot longevity with the Whiplash. In the past with other super lines, I’ve had fish break off at the boat right at the knot. I seldom have to rety the Whiplash and I’ve never broke off on a fish as of yet. That includes 40+ inch muskies.

The 80# is about a 16lb diameter, right?
April 6, 2002 at 1:43 am #240547Yes, it is about the same diameter as a typical 17lb mono. I have used the lighter whiplash for smaller setups as well. No complaints about any of it.
April 6, 2002 at 3:31 am #240557the other good braid i have used is power pro- it is more round than many of the others, knots seem stronger and i have not noticed the fraying with it. it comes in low vis green and hi vis yellow. i use the 30 lb for most, 50 in slop. they make a 20 and 10 also. most diameters are equivalent to a mono about 1/5. good luck.
