2014 Spring Flooding

I just looked at the snow depth coverage map for the Mississippi river watershed and there sure is a lot of snow. A lot of areas have over 15 inches on the ground. I know predicting floods is basically like predicting the weather, but it seems to me that we’re definitely set up for some high water this spring, especially if the thaw comes late and fast.

I know high water can result in a good year class for the walleye and sauger but I’m hoping we don’t get damaging floods.

Was starting to think the same thing a few weeks back. Lots of snow on the ground covering a very large area. Still a lot of winter to go to. What ever happens is should all be sorted out by July.

You might as well pull the camper to the top of the hill now.

The hardest part of pulling the camper is making the decision to pull the camper. After that it’s a breeze.

Spring flood could bring a fresh batch of snakes! Which means more snake shooting, which equals more snake shooting photo’s. So in turn its a win win situation for all of us!

Sauger, don’t encourage him. The snake hunting picture and now the shoveling picture have scarred many people forever!

Almost like last year and it wasn’t as bad as most anticipated. Year to year is different, though…

How deep in the ground is the frost up above the cities? Having the deeper snow cover for the entire winter can be a blessing in disguise. If the ground has been insulated by a deep blanket of snow, the frost won’t be as deep. It then melts out faster and absorbs a lot of water. Unlike down here, we’ve had snow cover – but not very thick. Last I heard our frost line was about 30-38″ (down here by me). Even with a few warm rains, that won’t melt out very fast.

I dug I the ditch near Stillwater and there was no frost. Up north is probably similar where it hasn’t been driven on or plowed. I think they may have more snow than here. Constructions sites and roads have 4 ft plus… Of frost, that is.

Iron River has 66″ of frost. The utilities are telling people to leave their water run and they’ll be charged what they used last year.

Lots of water pipes breaking in MI and as it thaws, I’m sure there will be more.

I would very interested in comparing this year’s data to 1984, 85 & 86. Those years were very similar in average daily Winter temps, significantly different snow fall amounts.

    1983, ’84, 85, 2013 of Pool 4 at the Dam.

The top graph is the pool elevations (Flood Stage is 683)
The bottom graph on each image is Flow in Cubic Feet Per Second

The 2014 graph hasn’t been written yet.

My guess is the frost is set in pretty good around the north metro. Lot of calls coming in this year from people with frozen water mains coming into their homes. Just had one yesterday that his was froze between the curb stop and city main. That should easily be 6 to 7′ down. You would think the snow would insulate some of these. Maybe these folks have their mains running under sidewalks and driveways.

It has been one very long, cold winter thus far.

If we are lucky, we will get a nice warming spell, then maybe another mild freeze, just to slow things down a bit, then a gradual warm.
