I just wanted to send a welcome out to the growing number of female anglers visiting the site. Recently I noticed a couple new names…. walleyegal, melissa… and of course, Jenn, who’s been with us for some time. Good to have you with us and contributing.

As a guide I’ve often noticed that its the gals and NOT the guys that pick up on new techniques and methods so much quicker. Why? Don’t know. Must be because men don’t listen and can’t ask for directions….LOL

    Welcome….

Well…you know what they say about teaching an old dog new tricks, but I’m working on it. Now if the weather and them dang walleye would just cooperate.

I know there are some women who fish on pool 4 who really know how to kick butt so to speak on catching walleyes. They fish the tournaments with their husbands and the husband / wife teams do real good. Also know that Jenn is one heck of a fisherwoman too. Nate about fell over when he saw her prefishing last year two hand jigging the head of the lake and later trolling boards out of her Pro V by herself. This gal knows how to fish and I’ll bet there are alot more. Welcome aboard Gals. Hope to learn from you too.

yeah James… I dont think they are as stubborn as us guys…. I know many times I was told where, when and how to catch em and I still spent half the day trying to do it MY way!!… just too thick headed to get it I guess…..

finally now that Ive pounded my head against wall and trees and everything else…. I finally have GOT it… so Im open to trying new things FIRST… and sticking with them until I give them a fair chance….. now I just got to get GOOD at all the new methods I have to use….. and now that Im not a one trick pony… I have to figure out which trick is the right one for the day!…. thats the part I REALLY have to figure out now….

    Hey H20 you aren’t kidding!

We tried the super doo’s for the first time last friday, and while I was having a hard time getting the hang of them, my girlfriend was totally kickin’ my can with them! She outfished me soundly, and I ain’t afraid to admit it!!

Fishing dos is simple. Maybe too simple. Some experienced guys struggle with them because they insist on over working them.

Here’s how to fish em’… get vertical. Drop your do to the bottom. Raise 4′ – 6″. Pause for a 20 count. Don’t twitch, hop, pop, jiggle or wiggle. To give you an idea of how much better these lures work when held motioness, I noticed that when boat wakes caused my rig to wobble side to side, resulting in a bit of action at the rod tips, we never got bit. My customers that focused and believed what I was telling them were floored this past week. The bite reminds me of about 8 ounces of washers slipped over the rod tip and slid down the line….. eventually making a sudden stop at the jig with the rod tip headed for the surface of the water.

These things are so much fun to fish, I’d rather catch a few less, but make up for it in size, and get to experience that “whapp” and the end of the line.

    Too cool….

hmmm guess I got lucky because the technique you describe is what I was using… and for sure hold them as still as possible… I even try to buffer wave action if I can…. pretty tough though…. they are really great in snaggy areas because your up off the bottom, so you spend less time on snags and more time fishin…… hawger just sent me a 100 pack of char/pepper on Monday and I got them today…. THANKS HAWGER!!!

Ya know, funny thing is, that’s pretty much what I told her to do after reading about how to fish them on FTR. My problem was I just couldn’t get my jig fishin’ brain to keep it still! Finally did figure it out after a while, but the damage to my ego had already been done!!LOL

Thanks for the refresher….I think I might need to let it hover a bit longer than I was too.

i don’t know why, but whenever my daughter fishes with us she is probably going to catch the biggest fish of the day. she is 14yrs old and has fished for at least 12 years. maybe its because she doesn’t take the fishing experience as seriously as her father and brother. when she was small (4-5yrs) she would take her barbie dolls out in the boat and pretend the livewell was a hot-tub! now when we go out she fishes for a while , catches a nice fish or two , then puts the rod down and reads a magazine or works on her tan. when she does catch a really nice fish (which happens more often than not) it just drives her big brother crazy. great memories…

Know a lady here in town who got her 3rd or 4th Master Angler Award from Manitoba this fall. She is 82!! Been fishing as long as I can remember and I can remember when Eisenhower was president. It”s great to see these gals out and about. Great for the sport.

Hey thanks James and Bill….a little bit of a late response here but I haven’t been on the computer in a week or so… we get just as addicted to the water and fishing as you guys do! In fact only one day off the water and I’m going through withdrawal already being back in the city… Thanks for the patience with all the questions on techniques/ tactics…… this message board has been a great learning tool!

    See ya

    ReefRunner:

Was that you coming up the ramp Saturday on Pool 5 at 3 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.? We were on the ramp and I recognized the headgear. I have a set just like that in flourescent orange made by and purchased at a bar in Maiden Rock back in the late 80’s. I stopped in to purchase another several years later and the gal who owned the bar at the time had sold and thus my chance at purchasing another was gone.
