I went over Broadway and 694 bridges the past 2 days and they are both locked up.

May have to check out the south side of nicollet island, sometimes with the falls being close it stays open, or up by the dam stays open but haven’t caught a fish up that way in a month. Never say never though.

Got an insider over boom island area and said no go over that way either. Anyone been on the spillway side of the coon rapids dam? Sometimes can chuck a lure in the seam there.

Usually some open water down below St. Anthony main most of the winter.

Found some at the dam, made the rookie mistake of not acclimating the few minnows I had for the morning, they pretty much died on impact

Don’t think it would have mattered anyways not much fish to be had but still good to relax, and see the continiing work on the dam. They have all 5 east gates in now and seem to be finishing up.

The big eddy I like to work below the 610 bridge has 6+” of ice, so I drilled some holes and worked it over for a while Thursday afternoon. The marcum showed some lookers but no takers.

That’s awesome. I was thinking of trying to hit some river ice last year, maybe give it a go this one, certainly cold enough. Saddens me to think last DEC.12 I was in the boat with my nephew out of Camden hammering the smallies, this year a lil different.

Be careful on those. Two years ago we had a little run-in with river ice while duck hunting. We did an afternoon hunt and when we on our way back to the ramp we ran into a giant sheet of ice. It had broken off somewhere up north and was blocking the ramp. It was a good 200 yards long and 100 yards wide and 8-10″ thick. One guy in another boat that was also stuck actually got out of his boat and walked across the ice to the ramp. He got his trailer and drove up to the next ramp up river, and we followed them. Then they gave my buddy a ride back to the other ramp to get his truck.

What I’m getting at, is that even though it is safe ice.. it could break off of shore at any time and send you down river . I’ll never fish river ice again after seeing that, just backwaters for me!

That is some good advice. I was thinking of tying off some rope and maybe walking in an inter tube out just in case. Haven’t fully thought it out yet but sounds like a fun time. Know a couple spots of some wintering holes for some big cats and SMB no more than 15 yds off shore and the current in the area is slim. Maybe instead of a vasectomy take a dunk in some 32 degree river water and they will just freeze and dry up.
