Went fishing up near Ford Dam area last evening 8/29. Fished the general area from the island down past the mouth to Minnehaha Creek. We were anchored out near Minnehaha entrance jigging while a barge went by us fairly close and my dad had something take his line in a steady pull. He wondered for a minute if he had hooked the barge. I pulled up ancher and motored around a bit and we realized he did not have the barge, something was swimming upriver and headed over to the mouth of Minnehaha. He said it was the biggest feeling fish he hever had on. It didn’t do a lot of fighting and acted like it didn’t even know it was hooked. It finally spit the hook after about 5 minutes. We will never know what it was…Exciting though! Caught lots of decent size channel cats, one flathead cat, a couple small walleye, and several crappie. All on jig and minnows. It was a beautiful night on the river!

Sounds like a fun trip. Wouldn’t be surprised if you might of hooked into a sturgeon or paddle fish up that way. Not a lot of room on that stretch of the river for a barge and anchored boats. Makes sure and give those guys plenty of room.

I remember reading an article in the St. Paul paper about the St. Paul police doing some scuba training below the Ford Dam and one of the police officers that was cruising the bottom of the river swam over a sunken log and when he touched it the log swam away. He was sooo freaked out he got out of the water ASAP! He swore it was over 10ft long. OK…it probably wasn’t really that long but even so a monster sturgeon! …RR
