Can anybody please tell me how the fishing is particularly around Pepin/Lake City area. We target white bass, but also will fish for others.

I was on the lake Saturday around the L.C. area and down. Found a nice pile of 17″-19″ Saugers willing to smash crankbaits trolled 2.5 mph in 19-20 FOW
August 19, 2013 at 5:37 pm #1190373I made it out for a couple hours near the dam for a test run.
I put on a show for the 3-4 boats that were up there until 8:30 when I went in.
Man were the sheepshead on fire!
bigpikePosts: 6259August 21, 2013 at 12:48 am #1190638Was on the south end today and we had a 45 minute window were we caught very nice gils – up to and over 9″ slabs. After that run we caught sheepys and a cat and a carp. I am guessing we caught it on a slow day, we fished the front edge of wing dams with crawlers and jigs
August 21, 2013 at 1:01 pm #1190714Thanks for the info. Keep em coming. I will be up there fishing out of Pepin the week of Sept 9. Any white bass action anywhere yet?

Nice work on the gills. Is the water really clear down that way?
bigpikePosts: 6259August 21, 2013 at 9:20 pm #1190813Water clarity was river brown, not sure what to compare it too. Certainly was not clear….
August 22, 2013 at 4:29 pm #1190979Ok thanks Bigpike, in previous years the water has been clear enough to see your bait a few feet down in the water around this time of year. Must be a little different this year.
bigpikePosts: 6259August 23, 2013 at 7:28 pm #1191207Just posted a report but we were there this week and the white bass fishing has not taken off yet and seems way behind for this time of year.
August 25, 2013 at 8:37 pm #1191391I made the trek down to fish the wing dams around Wabasha Saturday. The walleye bite was ok producing 5 15.5 to 18 inch walleyes and one 14″er. One hit a crawler, 1 on a willow cat, 2 on rattletraps, 1 on a leech and 1 on a bomber. The sunnies were more active in the morning while the walleyes were caught between 11 am and 3 pm when the sun was high in the sky. Only caught one sheepshead and no catfish. Did get one decent pike and couple smallies around 16-17 inches as well. Also pulled in 1 11 inch crappie.
Not bad considering the wind and all the boat traffic. The water clarity was 1.5 feet or so. I was kind of surprised to not find big groups of sunnies on the wing dams rather only finding 1 or 2 per dam with some producing a few more. The biggest sunfish was 9.5 inches long while the rest were 7-8.5 inches long and round. I don’t get down to the lower end of pool 4 often, but when I do it can be lot fun catching walleyes, bass and panfish down there.bigpikePosts: 6259August 26, 2013 at 1:31 am #1191418Quote:

Thanks for the update, I plan on heading down Tuesday afternoon for a Mississippi sleep over on an island. Did you hit the wingy’s south or north of town?
August 26, 2013 at 1:17 pm #1191470I fished both up river and down river of town. The good thing there is you don’t need to burn much gas to fish a bunch of wing dams. Someone was married in the Park saturday as well. The wedding party even took a little ride on a pontoon after the ceremony.
August 27, 2013 at 2:15 pm #1191606We usually fish the main lake. If we decide to try the river and the wing dams, is there an easy way to locate the wing dams other than using your lower unit? How about some kind of easy reading map that shows them?

Keep your eyes open. Watch the water flow along the side of the main channel. you will see a distinctive “line” where the surface is disturbed. Depending on the current, this is normally a few feet below where the dam is. There is often a can on those right above Wabasha close to the tip. Once you see one, you will always know what to look for.

You can find maps by googling mississippi navigational charts. There are little bars along the inside of the channel sticking out from shore. If you have a fish finder with gps/ and chip from lakemaster or navionics they will show the wing dams as well.
