I spent almost a week down in SE Iowa, upper NE Missouri and got home yesterday. We followed the Mississippi from Keokuk to Guttenburg and I can tell you that what we have in this area is NOTHING compared to down that way. From Iowa and uppwer Missouri, Keokuk is accessible by only one road that we could find [US218]. Many areas are underwater where normally I could drive. Lake Odessa, east of Wapelo, is way out of its natural banks. Every city and town along that normally beautiful river drive have serious issues.

The Skunk ran near to the campground we used and had just begun to fall. We could see miles of farmland in its path that won’t see a crop this year. The Des Moines was high but mostly in its banks where we saw it. The Cedar was high as well but looking as though it was coming down pretty well. Lots of damage was seen along it.

The Wapsipimnicon was high and ugly at New Hampton on the way south but was really sick looking closer to the river. Even the Turkey River was nuts and its usually pretty laid back. The Upper Iowa River seemed as though the worst had passed and was beginning to signs of dropping nicely.

The bottom line is that we don’t have water issues as compared to that area down there. Both cousins in the Quad Cities that fish have had to travel to the state’s interior to get any fishing done and then they have crowds, worse than they’ve seen in years. After seeing what Iowa has to deal with, I guess I won’t gripe about what we have.

Put them in touch with me if they want to catch some fish on the river. 4 of us got roughly 440 whites/gills yesterday on the miss fishing from the shore. Crappies are going nuts on the river also. Bass fishing is just unbelievable, they are feeding heavily again in post spawn. The higher the water gets the better the fishing gets!

    I am in the QC.

When I left the Quads yesterday one cousin was plotting a trip west soon. He’s retired and has plenty of time. These guys are super crappie anglers and fish little else and where they go the crappies are on fire right now.

Yeah crappies are biting just about any place you can find rocks. They are stacked into the rock banks looking for food post spawn. Any small jig thrown in less than 3′ of water will land you a crappie every other cast. There are quite a few inland lakes that have tons of crappies but they are mostly small. But you can get a hit every cast. I like to stay on the river for the 11-12″ fish, I don’t mess with those 7-9″ fish every cast on the small lakes like some do.. but there are a lot of people that like to sit and catch 100+ fish in an hour or so, and I’ll admit it is pretty fun at times.

    Anyways, offer is still open.
