Since fishing lines seem to be popular IDO topic this week…Has anyone else ever used that real cheap Zebco Outcast mono line? It’s like $1.80 at Fleet Farm ($1 when it goes on sale) for 400 yards I think. I bought some last year cuz I had some in my hand when it was $1 and the Fleet Farm fishing guy started chatting with me about it. He said he recommends it to everyone and swears by it. So, I figure…heck, for $1 or so, I’ll try it. I used it for vertical jigging last year/this spring. And I gotta say…pretty darn impressed. Not super sensitive I guess. But if you plan on losing a lot of line/jigs etc, or just want some cheap reliable line, heck, it sure worked for me. I even tried some of the 4lb test on my ultralight for casting spinners for trout and it works better (for me) than Berkley XL. Anyway, just figured I’d throw that out there.

I have. Was total crap. Went bad in about a week (tons of memory and went white as a cloud). I wouldn’t even use it for leader material, I gave it to the first kid I saw out fishing.
June 5, 2013 at 7:25 pm #1175907Hmmmm. Well, to each his own I guess. It’s worked well for me in a couple of different applications.
June 5, 2013 at 8:24 pm #1175920My 6lb Vanish leader snaps everytime before my 6lb Outcast mainline. I have caught fish over 20 pound in high flow with the stuff. Well… there is my opinion.

Just wasnt as good as I was used to is all. I try to stay on the expensive side since I consider the line one of the most important parts of fishing. I fish my rods hard and put them away wet, I do not baby them at all. If the line is not “great” it is crap to me.

June 5, 2013 at 10:44 pm #1175935I just bought some for leaders on the river. I can’t say I’d spool a reel with it.
June 6, 2013 at 1:36 am #1175967Didn’t you like the kid? If it was so bad I would just throw it away. No need to have the kid loose some tackle or worse a big fish.

I was thinking the exact same thing, it was a dollar, throw it out!
June 6, 2013 at 2:41 am #1175976So sad that some members here frown upon giving kids tackle. Well that was wrong, I know you don’t. You are just posting it to try and get a rise out of me. How do you sleep at night knowing the only reason you posted this was to try and make me look bad? Are you guys really that rude to people in public or just on the internet?
I would venture to guess the 6# line I gave him caught him a heck of a lot more than the 20# mono he was using for panfish. He was the happiest kid on earth and his dad was pretty darn happy as well! I made their day and slept good that night knowing how many fish they caught when they likely would have been skunked.
Reading the comments here saying how they like the line just goes to prove that something I consider crap might be good for someone else.
But you really don’t care about any of that… like I said you were just posting it to get a rise out of me. Wasn’t the rise you were expecting was it?

Wow, do you ever read what you write?

I save all my old tackle and line and give it to friends who have just gotten into fishing. A bad spool of line goes in the trash however. No need to have someone lose a bunch of fish due to line breakages and give them a negative view of the sport.
June 6, 2013 at 9:53 am #1175995I don’t frown on giving kids tackle. I frown on giving kids crap. Those were your words. As for giving kids tackle I save everything and give it to a teacher at a local school that has a fishing program. Some of the stuff has been fishing rods, reels, life jackets, ect. Not a dollar spool of line that I thought was crap. Some of it is what I don’t use anymore but some of it would be considered good stuff. You gave away a dollars worth of crap so you can sleep at night, good for you. My thoughts were why possibly discourage a youngster when they are just starting out. You can .
June 6, 2013 at 10:51 am #1176005OK kids—that is about enough from everyone. Kevin was not impressed with the line—-I hate the word crap and the image it causes in my head. Do you think for a second that he gave it to the young man to wreck his day or hurt his chances at becoming an avid angler. He felt that it was better than what the young man was using. Many products I buy I am not impressed with so I hand them down but it is never with the intent to wreck anyones day. Even if this line did not live up to the standards Kevin had hoped for it might have been been fine for catching 4 inch bluegills and much easier to cast than some of the “junk” that comes on cheap reels. Kevin has a tendency to speak from the cuff sometimes but his intentions are good and he has a passion for fishing. I do not know him but he is welcome in my boat any day because he is trying to better himself as an angler and as a human being. How about we work on the positive here and all work to get along. Just an observation from the old guy in the corner.

But I agree Kevin if you come up to the metro area you can come in my boat any day.

Another decent mono that won’t dent your wallet is the Cabelas store brand – ProLine
Ten bucks for 1750 yards. Many times cheaper on sale.

I have tried many of the higher priced brand name monofilament lines and keep coming back to Cabelas Proline. Not that the name brands are bad, but the Proline performs just as well at a fraction of the price.

I really wasn’t trying to be negative, more humorous, it sounded kinda funny about giving it to the kid I thought and I believe thats what spawned the “don’t you like him” I’m pretty sure no harm was meant. There I’m done
