So I took to some shore fishing earlier tonight down in north Minneapolis behind a bridge where I got some nice smallies the other week on the front side of a deep hole, so it being so close to shore thought I’d give it a chance with maybe some big eyes move in their after dark. Couldn’t have been more than my 6th or 7th cast get snagged up (not unusual), but it’s moving a tad bit, yes its dragging in very slowly. With 6pd mono on I couldn’t really horse the thing in but it was coming slowly, and at a certain point saw a stump starting to show up on the surface, but it was bobbing now so it couldn’t have been a log. Get it close enough my line got snagged on the lil twine string that connected the floating champagne bottle that connected it to a lil rock! The bottle looked like it came off the titanic and the string didn’t look to good either, and the rock, well, was just a rock. Scrubbed off the thick coat of green muck pasted to the side of the bottle to see a letter rolled up inside, with some type of contents jingling within it as well. Couldn’t tell what was bouncing around, but let me remind you this came right from a base of a bridge, in the city, in the context of some of my family has been in the Mpls fire department for some time now and the stories even though they don’t tell many, alot of them involve jumpers and bridges and shocking how many end it that way. But anywho, I am staring at this bottle, wondering what should I do? Well of course one has got to open it but what could be written? It probably would ruin ones day if it was some type of suicide note, or maybe some shell casing from the murders they commited, or possibly a wedding ring inside with a huge rock on it, with a note to the long lost husband to go F himself!! But possibly parents or family members could have some peace, or wishes of a dead person would be laid to rest, I have no clue but my imagination is getting the best of me at this point and seeming its the responsible thing to do in I go. Top comes off fairly easily and contents are nicely sealed, the top is plastic so the bottle isn’t too old which kind of bummer was hoping for some long lost 80yr old gem at this point, and bottoms up for the bottle and out plops 4 metal things??? some red metal string, a lil chunk of steel, a half of a screw head and some other bolt looking thing. Im confused, so I take out the letter and reads
“only you can save it, the (paper rip) you collect and the more you save and the time you save a whole alot, and (paper rip) price is good like $3.50 on copper and (paper rip) on brass. Well, you do the math o(paper rip) make sure you call the recycling to find out how much it is.
    11-11-11 Friday 7:30pm”

I don’t know what the he## to think at this point, crazy people. Was there some kind of treasure hunt I missed or something? 5 or 6 things of precious metals at the bottom of a river for keepsake? Totally anti-climatic I know but thought I would share and see what are other people’s thoughts bc my brain hurts after this one.

It makes for a good story, but just someone’s entertainment. I think they should have waited until 11:11:11 to make the time align to the day, month, and year to take it a step further.

We have 12/12/12 coming up on Weds, so you can add your statement to the time capsule and give it some real meaning for the next person that finds it with both messages enclosed. Of course, you should drop it at 12:12:12, either during the day or night.

you could of gotten lucky and had the bottle be from an ice fisherman- and be full of jigs/slender spoons

A long time ago my wife and I threw a message into a 40oz bottle. We threw it off her grandmas shore on superior in Lutsen. We got a reply months later from a guy from the UP Of Michigan. Your story reminded me of that.

Found a bottle in the Mississippi with a dozen short notes in it. All written in spanish. Turns out they were all notes to dead relatives. I was told by the guy I had translate the notes this is a New Years day thing for some.

Don’t you have to rub the bottle for a genie to appear? Did you manage to land any fish? Might hit the bank for one last time later.

Thats waht I was wondering to. Did you get any walleyes. We tried Monticello for the 1st time last year around new years. Hung out until right at dark and the walleyes came in. Nothing big but about 5 or 6 nice eater sized fish that hit hair jigs and plastics. That water just on the north side of the cities is not a whole lot different than farther up north. Would think finding a nice rock pile or gravel bar and you might just find the eyes coming up at dark.

I hit the bank at the end of the street at dusk, but didn’t stay long. I bumped up my jig size with the water rising and current picking up and managed to lose a couple of jigs real fast. Between having to retie and the snow falling out of the trees on me, I had enough. Might be it for a while now from shore. I’m sure a lot of the shore and all the eddies will ice up. I might have to try the Monticello area, with the power plant warming the water up there.
