I know this isn’t the ice fishing forum, but figured since most of you live in the same general area I do, I’d pose it here. Have any of you headed north for a day of ice fishing on Mille lacs (or some other lake you’d suggest) in search of decent ice/walleye/perch? I’m trying to figure out how realistic it would be to leave Rochester early in the morning to, say Mille lacs for example, walk out, fish for a few hours, and then drive back to Rochester. Cheap trip etc. Any thoughts? And if I tried something like that, any general advice on what area of Mille lacs to aim for? I’ve never fished it before. Thanks.

Might be a tuiired puppy but it can be done. Best to plan for 3.5 hours on the road each way if you stay on the east shore or south shore, 4 if you look to Garrison. You might do better if you wear heavy shoes.

I came home along the west shore on Saturday and any ice there may have been was piled up along the shoreline. The east shore had some shale on Friday when we drove past but we didn’t see a soul out on it. I think I’d call a resort or two before leaving here. No ice is real hard to walk on.
