Upper Mississippi River navigation season coming to an end

ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, will officially close the navigation season on the Upper Mississippi River Dec. 3.

Traditionally, the last tow heading south of Lock and Dam 2, near Hastings, Minn., has marked the end of the navigation season. The Motor Vessel Show Me State was locked through Hastings Nov. 28. The Motor Vessel Deanna Ann was the first tow of the 2012 season. It was locked through March 17. The 2011 season ended on Dec. 5.

While the Mississippi River hasn’t frozen over yet, the Corps will begin winter renovation and maintenance at Lock and Dam 6, near Trempealeau, Wis., Dec. 3. The repairs require the lock to be completely closed during the maintenance, which also means the end of the navigation season. The lock repairs are scheduled to be complete by March 11.

During the navigation closure, the river will continue to be managed in a manner that maintains the 9-foot channel in the system. All additional flows will be passed downstream. The river will be closed to all lockages from Minneapolis to Lock and Dam 10 in Guttenberg, Iowa. If lockage is necessary during the navigation closure, please contact Bryan Peterson at (651) 290-5986.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, serves the American public in the areas of environmental enhancement, navigation, flood damage reduction, water and wetlands regulation, recreation sites and disaster response. It contributes around $175 million to the five-state district economy. The 700 employees work at more than 40 sites in five upper-Midwest states. Here’s to keeping L&D 1 closed for a few years, while we get the barrier constructed.

I can’t seem to find the answer if these guys brought the fish in to keep their jobs or if they were legitimately found in the river?

Why is this so hush hush?

A simple DNA test should stop this question from being asked.

Why is the Corp taking over EDNA testing? Too many questions as to how and where samples are being taken?

Who has to gain if the Asian Carp are found?
    Testing companies?

Does a barrier work? What? The company that builds them doesn’t know??

Love ya Buzz, but maybe we should stick to stocking bass and walleyes for a while.

I’m amazed at how groups, commissioners and Governor can twist the Corp of Engineers from spending money on considering a fish passage way in 2010, to even considering closing a lock in 2012.

    Quote:

The primary objectives of a fish passage project at Lock and Dam 3 are to provide continuous habitat
connectivity for migratory fishes through the dam, increase habitat accessibility for migratory fishes, and
increase abundance of migratory fish populations.

Yesterday the best thing in the world was to open up the migration routes. Today the sky is falling.

What? MN is going to give the Corp money?

Authorized representatives of the District Commander for the St. Paul District are negotiating an agreement with DNR to accept and expend funds to expedite review and evaluations of Section 408 proposed modifications to Corps lock and dam facilities on the Mississippi River in Minnesota. The DNR proposal is for installation and operation of a fish barrier at one or more Corps locks and dams.

If this is why we will be paying higher fishing license cost…we’ve been screwed.

You the man BK!! Stay all over these guys until the proof is provided.

How many man hours are spent fishing the Mississippi? And how many of these things have been spotted? And how many have been caught hook & line?

Granny use to say “the proof is in the pudding.” (whatever that meant ) but Granny also said ” if it looks like a skunk, walks like a skunk, smells like a skunk, then it’s a skunk”. This whole thing smells like a skunk doesn’t it?
