Question on place names on the river

On pool 3 what is the difference between Buffalo Slough and Brewer lake/Brewer’s cut??? Everyone calls it Buffalo but I have not seen that on ANY MAP. I don’t know who named all this stuff, but it seems like there are no maps to set a standard for naming places on the River and it drives me nuts. And I have done my research and looked at many many maps. You look at Navionics vs. the Army Corp. vs. Google Earth vs. bing maps and you can find four names for the same place sometimes! Also, you can look at about every pool from St. Paul to the quad cities and each one will have one of the following: goose lake, buffalo slough, spring lake, truedale slough, truedale lake, beef slough, Minnesota Slough (real original), big lake, crooked slough, mud lake, catfish slough, platypus slough, etc. I mean didn’t the old codger who was lucky enough to name sloughs and islands and backwater lakes ever think of throwing a squirrel or turkey into the mix? What about a wild boar? Maybe even a Sasquatch or jack-a-lope??? What the hell is a truedale, and why is it, he, she relevant? If I could go back in time to the early 20th century and find the locals who named places on the river I’d give them a piece of my mind. There weren’t even wild buffalo in MN/WI when the modern pools were formed so how did they get sloughs with their namesake??? And beef slough? Did they find hamburgers floating around in it or what? Buck slough or Coyote slough would make a helluva lot more sense. How cool would it be to say, “my buddy caught a 29″ ‘eye tossing ringworms at the head of treasure chest island!” Or, “Old Jim snuck his flat back into moose hoof slough and caught the biggest bass I’ve ever seen!!” Compare that to, “Oh ja, Bruce ya know, he went and caught a few 5″ gills in front of goose island, just down from truedale slough, and around the corner from mud lake.” What a snooze fest. I really think some standardized map should be created and some of the old names need to go.

You’d have to go back a long long way in time to find the origin of most of those named places. You’ll find that a lot people lived on the high ground in the river proper before the coe forced them out with the lock and dam system Those same people named most of those places or those places were named for.
I’d be interested in the 90 yr old guy’s reaction when you tell him the name “Minn. Slough”, which he’s been fishing his whole life, just don’t cut it anymore and you want to rename it.

Been giving names to spots here on pool 2 for a while. Just got tired to trying to explain to people that “Caught fish on that dam down river from the island, next to the tree with the log on it.” Throw a 100 years on some of these names and people will be wondering the same thing. What and the heck where those guys thinking.

Well, I’m not 90 but I can tell you how Buffalo Slough was named.

About 10 years ago Chris Tuckner told everyone he was catching big walleyes there and was joking around while drunk one day how he’s been “Buffaloing” everyone on where he caught them.

That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

The maps I have list some…not all of the names you’ve mentioned. Some of the places in the back channel have been named by the locals and are only whispered at picnic tables at Everts late night after checking to ensure the coast is clear.

I remember learning those and others here on IDO (FTR then) Not many people discuss them openly on the internet now. Many learned that lesson the hard way.

It’s hard to learn spots names with RRR. Whenever I fish with him the name of the spots keep changing. One thing remains constant- If we don’t catch anything he says ” this is a dead spot”!!!

We actually rename places on pool 4 so nobody will know what we are talking about.

By the way, stop looking for Buffalo Slough. There are no fish there anyway.
