On pool 3 what is the difference between Buffalo Slough and Brewer lake/Brewer’s cut??? Everyone calls it Buffalo but I have not seen that on ANY MAP. I don’t know who named all this stuff, but it seems like there are no maps to set a standard for naming places on the River and it drives me nuts. And I have done my research and looked at many many maps. You look at Navionics vs. the Army Corp. vs. Google Earth vs. bing maps and you can find four names for the same place sometimes! Also, you can look at about every pool from St. Paul to the quad cities and each one will have one of the following: goose lake, buffalo slough, spring lake, truedale slough, truedale lake, beef slough, Minnesota Slough (real original), big lake, crooked slough, mud lake, catfish slough, platypus slough, etc. I mean didn’t the old codger who was lucky enough to name sloughs and islands and backwater lakes ever think of throwing a squirrel or turkey into the mix? What about a wild boar? Maybe even a Sasquatch or jack-a-lope??? What the hell is a truedale, and why is it, he, she relevant? If I could go back in time to the early 20th century and find the locals who named places on the river I’d give them a piece of my mind. There weren’t even wild buffalo in MN/WI when the modern pools were formed so how did they get sloughs with their namesake??? And beef slough? Did they find hamburgers floating around in it or what? Buck slough or Coyote slough would make a helluva lot more sense. How cool would it be to say, “my buddy caught a 29″ ‘eye tossing ringworms at the head of treasure chest island!” Or, “Old Jim snuck his flat back into moose hoof slough and caught the biggest bass I’ve ever seen!!” Compare that to, “Oh ja, Bruce ya know, he went and caught a few 5″ gills in front of goose island, just down from truedale slough, and around the corner from mud lake.” What a snooze fest. I really think some standardized map should be created and some of the old names need to go.
