anchor just above it so that with a nice cast you can reach the top of it.. this way you can adjust your cast to work different depths of the face..
Oh the gills are absolutely on fire and they are the nice 8-10 inch size..
good luck…

August 30, 2012 at 2:13 am #1095687on wing dams- blue gills, and sheepies will utilize the fronts and tops of nearly every dam- closer to backwaters= more blue gills. Smallies are on the backside of most dams, as are catfish, and this year catfish seem to be all over every part of every dam and every part of the river. Walleyes are much trickier with the dam deal- and it takes YEARS to learn. You could literally miss having a eye on the line every cast by 10 feet. Every dam is different- oh yeah, and their position on the dam changes daily. dstewart makes it look pretty easy, but trust me it is not.

It’s really amazing how easy Dustin makes it look, but trust me, it requires a lot of patience, skill, & feel. 3 things I’ve been working on for a long time.
August 30, 2012 at 4:13 am #1095720One thing I can recommend is bringing extra line and lots of jigs..lots of snags
August 30, 2012 at 1:53 pm #1095771For eyes- a precision jig/ or a hutch tackle jig with a half a crawler or a leech. Do what theGun said.
Bluegill- float a lil slip bobber to the face of dam or over the top, recast if not bit. Adjust depth according to snags. Lil jigs, or small hook and a chunk of crawler. Could probably do a light set rig to the front as well, or have kids cast small jigs. I have never targeted them on dams, just caught them, but I don’t see why this wouldn’t work.
Watch the IDO video dog day wingdams- if that doesn’t work, hire Dustin Stewart for a day, you won’t be disappointed. PM me if you can’t find his contact info-
August 30, 2012 at 4:02 pm #1095824For the gills get yourself a fist full of 1/16oz cheap round ball jigs, orange and chartreuse are the only colors you need. The cheaper round ball jigs don’t hurt as much when you lose them. Tip the jigs with a chunk of crawler or garden worms. The lighter jigs do not get hung up as often as the heavier jigs. This is a great way to teach the kids jig fishing and it will prepare them and build their confidence for jig fishing walleyes.
Cast to the face of the wing dam and work back just as you would for walleyes. We have been picking off a few walleyes while fishing for the Gills on Pool 8.
The bigger gills have been spending their time at the tip of the wing dam while smaller gills can be found in the middle and towards the shoreline.
