Barge headed north

I see on the corps barge traffic report that The Reggie G Locked through 7 yesterday upbound. Heard a rumor they’d be in Minneapolis by Friday, just had to check it out. In my experience Lake Pepin opens quickly after a barge tears a hole through it. The water temperature in 5 always responds with a significant rise, the walleyes respond to the rise in the water temperature. …Be aware that the amount of ice coming through 5 is usually obscene while Pepin flushes itself. Time to shake off the winter, dust off the tackle and get serious.

Isn’t there too much ice on Pepin?

Load the first barge light, drive it up on the ice, it’s all physics from there…. The ice isn’t as stong as it is thick anymore, they’ve got grain to move.

First barge of the year should be in ALma as I speak. The boat has 8 barges and headed for St.Paul. It should break that mess up on Lake Pepin sometime tonight or early morning. Report comes from ALma dam personnel.

Thanks, that means Pepin should be open in a few days as it usually does after the barge goes through. Great News!!!

This all means good news guys! Don’t quote me, but the last time I heard there was around 9 inches of ice in lake pepin. No sweat for Reggie G to break through that ice. A couple of years ago I don’t remember what boat it was, but it broke through 24 inches of ice. Needless to say, it did take some time.

Just a reminder when lake breakes open. Take it easy! There are alot of ice chuncks that like to huver about 3 inches below the surface. Bad on props.

Just heard on radio barge is stuck in the ice on Pepin. I doubt it will be stuck for long. “I think I can, I think I can….”
