A friend and I hit Pepin this morning thinking getting ahead of the on-coming high water might not be a bad idea. We were rewarded.

Our approach was simple. We pulled floaters dressed up with a leech or a crawler on a quick death hook behind some chartreuse and orange beads. Without much wind we were able to focus on some 12 to 16 foot water that held plenty of fish. Up and down stream both had equal levels of action.

We found lots of sauger, none of which were huge but decent table size. We kept a half dozen. To go with the sauger we found a nice 12-13 inch perch. We also put a couple crappies in the well too. I vowed not to mention the sheephead, but I didn’t catch it so….

The water was nice today as were the temps. The lake may have come up just slightly during our adventure but not much if it did. Boat traffic was minimal until about 9AM. Then it seemed like boats from about six stated converged on the lake. The trip, by design, was going to be a short one so when the traffic picked up, we did like-wise and came home. Got supper for the two families so I guess we can say the morning was a success.

Take care on the water and hiways everyone. Have a great Memorial Day. I think the lake will be doable for a couple days yet if you are heading there.

I was out there also this morn. pulling cranks. Debris starting to pick up so I had to check the lures often, but I managed to pick up limit. Then, to top it off, some numb nut backed into my trailer and busted one of my tail lights.

Tom, where did you find the quick death hooks? Those are very hard to find…thought they were discontinued???

Roschen or the public landing above Hok-si-la? Roschen filled up pretty quick this morning. I saw some real dandy parking by one rig in particular.
