Heading to pool 2 tomorrow morning. I have never been there before. I am looking for some suggestions. Any info will be helpful. Walleyes would be nice but open to other fish also.

I will be going to the 494 launch around 9:00 AM. Will there be room in the parking lot at that time or do I need to arrive earlier? Thanks, Bruce

I’m sure the launch will be fairly open. There are people out there, but P2 has been a dead sea for a couple of weeks now — theory is that most of the fish are up in the MN River getting ready to spawn. There are probably some fish north of the confluence toward the Ford Dam, too, but I doubt all that many.

I honestly don’t know anyone who has found a reliable pattern recently. If anyone is doing well, they’re doing a darn good job keeping it quiet. Best results have been a few fish here, and a few fish there without much consistency. My advice would be to take a run and gun approach to see if you can find something worth spending time on. If you locate any walleyes, maybe you can PM me with the specifics!

X2 on John’s comments. First time out from 494 I guess I’d point you upstream. Try the airport area and the wingdams along the can line there. ( Just upstream from where you go under a train bridge.) You can also try verticle jigging the main channel up there for suager.

If you jst want to go for a scenic boat ride, head south. Fish anything that looks interesting!

    Good Luck.

Is there a time when it picks up? Or is that just a fall thing?

Fall is great for big fish. May/June is great for numbers when there is a lot of fish and the shad arent really available yet as a competing food source.

Haven’t been down there yet this year but I’ve had some real good luck in the past years around this time working them 2 bridge pillars just to the left of the launch on the shallow side. Try vertical jigging. If that don’t work I’d use a small sucker on the bottom behind one of them pillars.

x3 on what John said. P2 is just super slow right now. This past week I started picking up some fish casting crankbaits. No big fish though. I have not caught a nice fish on P2 in a couple of weeks. We are just going to have to wait it out until the big fish come out of hiding. For now, I would fish shallow and don’t be afraid to toss cranks in the middle of day. In the low light hours, focus on plastics.

    Good luck!

I broke down and fished up by the ford dam on Friday afternoon There are quite a few fish in the area, but apparently they’re all males. Still, it was nice to find some action. I probably caught 16-18 fish in a couple hours, biggest around 20″.

Isn’t it terrible how spoiled we are? 16-18 total fish with a 20 incher in a couple hours on most lakes within a 2 hour drive of the metro would have many of us giggling with delight. On pool 2 it “was nice to find some action”.

“it was nice to find some action” or in my case “I caught some trash fish(walleyes) while out bass fishing.”

which did happen today by the way, and I was surprised the fish was still very fat, didn’t look like they’d spawned.
