Mike and I slipped his boat in at 6:30am just below the dam. It was time for us to hit the crowd after staying in the middle of the pool the last 2 trips. The parking lot was proof that we were running late but yet maybe just on time. No sooner than we dumped in and started running up river a line of headlights appeared….we laughed and chuckled about our perfect timing
First spot revealed the targeted area for the first 20 boats at the landing. Making a couple drifts along a current seam and not liking the outcome we started long lining farther down river. A few bumps here and there but no takers while dragging ring worms and paddle tails. Paying attention to details soon had us noticing there was good action on the current seam in the second secret spot just below the locks
After trying this and that it was time to move up and assume 2nd position on the seam. First 2 times the water spike didn’t want to take hold with the wind pushing the boat up river. 3rd drop of the ground digger found its mark, once we got smart enough to figure where the drop needed to be placed as too let out enough rope to dig and hold bottom, but keep distance between us and the first boat.
After down sizing to a 1/8 – 3/16oz jig, green or orange, tipped we a minnow thumps starting signaling through the rod. Mike was running a small sinker and colored hook with a minnow for his taker’s. In 10-15fow water we found some good sized orange fins, pike and, some short eyes with Mike’s best at 15.5inches. It felt good to be on a bite I will add with that comment; the good bite was early with things slowing down around 11am.
Thanks for swinging in and saying hello Curt CLWuensch has the boat of my dreams, Mike watched me wet myself as I eyed over the Skeeter
All in all a good day and we met some very nice people. Now it is time for me to go and put more lotion on my ears which will soon look like raisins if not attended to, take the sun block
Good Luck fishing people
