Any pool 5 reports? I am heading there tomorrow morning and wondering if anything is happening. Thanks!

What about Pool 5?

Well what’s to report?
Action is about like Redwing has been. Slow. Granted we didn’t race all over the river “throwing everything we have” but it is still slow.
I’m going to have to learn to use lindy rigs again I guess. Maybe that will help. I just can’t figure out what the deal is. The last two years has stink, stank, stunk, for me and my river fishing.
I watched people trolling, three way rigging under an anchor, and verticle jigging everything. About the same. Every now and again someone would catch a dink sauger or a sheepie.
About the only steady action I found was near the wiggle waggle. Watched a group of about 4-5 boats work a 19′ hole for a bunch of dink saugers. At least they were catching fish!
Maybe the evening bite is better, it can’t be much worse. Oh well. Just blowing off some frustration here. I think I am going to start chasing crappie right quick. Rumor is the lakes are warming and the crappie should be active soon.

The best presentation right now has been pulling cranks. That bite has been really good compared to the jiggers. I think a lot of people are flying right over the top of these fish while jigging. I have slowed way down while pulling cranks and both me and my dad have seen some real good numbers.
Try pulling cranks on the tips of wingdams or through cuts of wingdams. The fish we have been getting have really been smacking the @#$# out of them. I have been pulling #7 and #9 floating raps with a 4 oz. sinker.
Give that a try and let us know how you do.
April 13, 2004 at 5:05 pm #300943Where do you guys get those humongo sinkers and what style are they?
April 14, 2004 at 1:08 am #299392Where else? the Main Channel, 3 to 6 oz sinkers in pencil pyramid and bass styles. Brian the day we saw you you left too early. The bite picked up late afternoon over by the roller gates. Nothing big but a lot more action than we were getting on the other drift.I looked for you but you had already gone.
April 14, 2004 at 3:10 am #301016That’s the story for my fishing lately. Too early or too late. I remember the days of fishing from sunup to sundown. Darn kids…
Even still the bite is just off for me. I doubt the walleye and sauger have wised up to what a jig is. Few years back it was nothing to pull 40-50 fish up in an afternoon. Maybe word has spread about my prowess? LOL
If it works out I am going to try for an evening trip Saturday. Depends on the weather and right now I am praying for rain.
For those of you that havent checked out The Main channel, be sure you do. After they sell you some bait they will tell you where to go!
pittmdPosts: 181April 15, 2004 at 2:15 am #301142Wow. Be careful about telling the misses you want to try a three-way the next time out. You gotta be quick to explain what it is or better yet have one handy for visual reference!
When you use that three-way how stiff of a rod must you have? Mine are all medium/heavy with fast action. Does a guy have to break out the musky rods?
I have dabbled with this presentation in the past with mild success. Seems I always end up using it as a “panfish rig” type set up. By the time I remember I have it out the darn fish has already digested my minow and crapped the hook out. Makes biting the hook off (avoid killing fish) a messy deal too.
An idea just popped into my head. Would using a heavy jig head instead of a bottom bouncer be out of the question?
I guess if I want a fish dinner I either have to buy the expensive store stuff or “invest” a hundred bucks in some crank baits.

Riveratt,
Using a heavy jig is not a bad idea at all. It would be a called a dubuque rig then. I usually end up doing that a couple times though out the year. Just remember that is two lines in the water. Pulling that jig up stream with either a floater or crank-real slow- works real well during certain periods of the year.
April 16, 2004 at 1:55 am #301272Riveratt, I use old medium action lightning rods with power pro line for my 3-ways. quite a bit of give in the rods. I you use mono line you can use a stiffer rod. [why do I feel like i’m writing cheap porn?]
gatzeyePosts: 8April 19, 2004 at 12:36 pm #301545Fished pool 5 on Saturday. Caught some sauger along the walls by the lock vertical jigging and pulled a few off the wing dams by the north end of the island. Got some on 3 ways near the top of the wing dams as well. Couldn’t find any walleye.
