Pool 1 – Above Ford Dam

I have spent many seasons fishing the upper portion of Pool 2 but have never locked through the Ford Dam and tried the waters immediately above the dam. I am primarily a fly fisherman going after smallies. Does anyone have any experience immediately above the Ford dam? What is the shoreline structure like? My boating friends tell me that going through the lock is no big deal and the operators are more than willing to share the schedule so that part is easy. I have looked through the internet etc for info on the waters above the dam but have found zip. Any info – particularly related to smallies – would be greatly appreciated.

I’ve done a little smallmouth fishing near Boom Island and St. Anthony Falls area. The fishing is decent but most of the fish are rather small ( 1 1/2 – 2 Lbs. )the is a fair amout of Rock riprap in the area that always seems to hold fish. The structure is not that different from the upper part of pool 2.

I locked through once and fished it. Fishing was slow for me…but I believe there are big smallies in there…I have seen reports here on IDO. I’ll see if I can dig one up.

I went up there this fall and caught a pile of smallies on jerkbaits. Most were smaller, but did get one about 18 inches.
