Corps invites public to tour Lock and Dam 5A, near Fountain City, Wis.
ST. PAUL, Minn. – The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, will host an open house at Lock and Dam 5A, which is located near Fountain City, Wis., Aug. 13 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The Corps’ open house is in conjunction with the Fountain City, Wis., Lions Club event from Aug. 12 to 14.
Lock and Dam 5A is located at Mississippi River mile marker 728.5. It was constructed in 1932 and consists of a concrete structure 110 feet wide by 600 feet long.
In 2010, 6,738 vessels locked through Lock and Dam 5A. 756 commercial tows with loaded barges locked through carrying 6,981,410 tons of cargo. 5,719 recreational boats, 41 other boats and 222 tows with no barges also locked through in 2010.
