While trying to put the hammer down on crank’n P7 walleyes, picked up this Brown. Talking with my buddy Milemark_714, it seems like we get this bonus about once every ten year. They are there and I haven’t invested any time to pattern them. But I just love the color and attitude these browns have when they smack a bait with authority.

This guy was released so hopefully someone else gets to enjoy a bonus photo op as well. BTW, I don’t where pink…niece came up to enjoy the April Polar Vortex and be my netgirl.

Great colored fish. I was looking at the fish in the pic and didn’t even notice the pink gloves. laugh

Nice catch and nice looking fish. That has to be a surprise to see one of those come up.

Sweet. I love when trout are caught where they aren’t expected.

But, did you catch any walleyes?

    hah hah hah

Sorry had to let the tears clear from my eyes from laughing. Night crank’n from 830 to midnight yielded about all the walleyes a guy would want to catch. I’ve got about a dozen new gill slices in my hands plus all the new bleeding cracks from constant wet/dry in the cold. Can barely hold a steering wheel to drive.

Daytime was a very different story. Most consistent was sweeping blades behind obstructions. Caught very few eyes or sauger on plastics. With about a 40K flow, 3/8 blades in purple/orange or white pink for suager and 1/2 oz (large profile) in Pearl or Pink/Purple two tone blades for eyes. Ironically, the majority of eater eyes we kept were plump full of 3″ perch – yet, nothing aggressive on firetiger or perch pattern hair.

I got two piggies for the couple nights of effort. 27+” plump full of spawn and a 30+” that was nearly spawned out. But to me the true highlight (besides the time with my brother) was popping this beautiful brown. Per total of man hours fished on the river, trout are very rare and far and few in between. I’ll be very lucky to catch a couple more in the rest of my life. (on the Mississippi river)

Daytime on structure produced tons of dinks. 9″ sauger to 14″ eyes. Better fish on the edges of the channel. But about 45 minutes after dark, a couple rocky shelves and clam bed came to life with a lot of 17-18 males. Also caught a few 18-20″ females that still had spawn. The 27″ breeched the surface to hit a J7 that I was lifting up to cast again in about 4fow. That made for some excitement with only having 18″ of line out from the tip when it hit.

Not much in the way of pics. Just had my phone and i had no intent of taking it out in the rain or while was by myself – big fish selfies never turn out

Thats awesome Randy… the trout and the eyes. I know of several trout being caught by my dad and others over the years but they are still surprising every time.

Do you think most of these fish are finishing up and are trying to reload energy or they are in the middle of the spawn?

Winding down. I got a few females that were plump with spawn, but not many. Vast majority of “keepers” were 17″ males that were all milted out. Not many squirting males at all. Makes me wonder if the few females that had eggs dropped them, will there even be males to fertilize them???

    Randy,

There is a slough on Pool 8 that we catch a rainbow on every 5-6 years. Very surprising to say the least. I have never caught a brown though.

    Nice work!
