pool 6/7 questions

It seems every year that something and/or some excuse always comes up that I never get out on the actual river very much(not counting lake onalaska). In part fishing in current is something I am not used to and probably spooks me a bit. Looking at the 2 week forecast it doesn’t really look like temps I would care to sit in a treestand so thinking maybe it’s time to just go give it a whirl. Targeting primarily walleye on either upper pool 7 or lower pool 6, would I expect to find them on wing dams?

Also, what is considered high flow in these pools this time of year? I see they are predicting it to be a tailwater stage just over 642, looks well below the ‘action’ stage, but I honestly have no idea what all that really means. Would flow be up enough to make it difficult for a current ‘noob’ to get the hang of it?

The short answer is, yes the flow will be pretty high for wing dams over the next few weeks. I use LaCrosse as a gauge, Normal water levels in LaCrosse are around 5’8″ and flow is around 16ckfs. By next Thursday it’s predicted to be at 8’7″ and about 75ckfs. There hasn’t been a great wing dam bite pretty much all year with the water going up and down so often. You can find them on certain dams when the water drops, but it hasn’t stayed consistent.

If I had to choose between 6 and 7, I’d fish 6, there’s a lot more back waters etc…. You’re very limited on the upper end of 7 in high water.
