Finally was able to get the boat out to do some walleye fishing, mostly because the wife thought she might be able to start getting a tan today! We only had about 3 hours to fish so I hit a few traditional big fish spots in 7-15 FOW. Water temp was from 34.5-36. No walleye boated but did lose a heavy fish that thumped pretty hard and one 5lb sheepshead. Insane how they feel like a nice walleye when fishing is slow! Mostly pulled ringworms but did try minnows. A few boats that were fishing close to the dam were catching saugers with few fish big enough to keep. Slow fishing but felt great to be on the water.

Made it out Sat 12th, water temp 37+ below dam. We fished about 8-3. No debris or ice flow, water flow was moderate, limited visibility, light chocolate colored. Landing was close to full by midday, no dock in yet, but restrooms were open ;). Fished mostly in dam area (locks to float) with 2 small walleyes and 1 small sauger, tried to make them look big. Bait shot said the perch were hitting but didn’t see any caught. Boats were mostly bringing in the same as us, small ones, not a lot either. Seen one stringer with 2 decent eyes, maybe 15-17″, poles looked to be jigs with chart/orange plastic, probably tipped with minnows, guessing 3/8 oz. People moving around a lot, up and down but nothing ever seemed to work. Barges started moving in around noon, then the 5 boats below the lock had to go elsewhere. Tossed minnows and crawlers in 8 – 35′ FOW never found a pattern. Seen a few boats by power plant exhaust flow, seen 1 small fish boated. A lot of water flowing down from Eau Claire, so would expect the water to rise soon.
Unconfirmed: talked with neighbor the next day, said his buddies were on float that night, landing some big ones – seems I always here that. Sure was great to get out, happened to be 1 year ago that day was down there for 1st time in 2015, caught some eyes that day, the next week none. At least I didn’t put my plug in the wrong hole and have to reload boat to make it float :), OK it was his buddies boat, but had to smile, been there (forgot the plug). No stinger hooks required this day.
