was anyone else out in the wind on sunday? was a very tough bite for my boat, I couldn’t seem to get a pattern going. 1 nice walleye 1 sauger and off coarse northern, I only seen one other fish boated which was a small suager. I was dragging rigs and 3way sticks. the walleye was shallow 9ft and the sauger was suspended 15 ft down in 30 ft.

Tough luck on the hard bite. What time of the day did you fish?

got there later than I wanted…… from noon till about 545. There was still a few boats up on the eastside by the dam that stuck it out into the night.

With the river being as clean/clear as it is this year and the amount of forage in the system maybe get out of the go to’s and try something outside the box such as area fished, fishing tactic or time of the day fishing whistling

I have to agree with Jesse. River is really clear right now. When I was out the other day, I fished from 8am until 6pm. Caught all my fish the last hour. I’ve heard that live bait is effective, but was not effective for me. Only thing a guy can do is keep trying and changing tactics until you find something that works.

You ain’t kidding. The shad are unbelievable. Gonna have to think out side the box. Can’t make it this weekend???? hopefully she will warm up a bit and get some color in that water.

Pool 4 getting busy yet? Thinking about heading up there within the next week or so, but not sure if weekends are a circus or what, haven’t fished Red Wing before. Looks like the bite is starting to pick up a bit, the ice bite has shut off lately by me.

Im sure this weekend will be a ZOO for sure, all the “fair weather” fisherman will be out. haven’t been down for a week, the water was VERY clear and cold still. should be able to put some white tips in the well this weekend. waytogo

Figured that, think I’ll take a weekday off instead! Spend the weekend getting the boat ready and see if I can pull a few more through the ice.

The Eagles will be munching on the scour hole fish that are “released” this weekend.

Saturday is the FYBO tourney and with 60 some boats already entered,
    it will surely be busy.

I was out Friday and Saturday last week. That scout hole was being killed. 80fow. If you’re willing to take that risk, you’d better be ready to keep everything you catch.

I’m pretty certain the days BK and I have spent on the river when it was between -20° to 0°… we didn’t see too many other boats out there. What exactly do you consider a “fair weather” fisherman? and are you a “fair weather” fisherman?

    Lol.
I have been on pool 4 more days by myself this year than I have with another boat on the water.

    Know what you mean Jesse

Those days, when there’s no other boats out there, are so peaceful and serene. Darned cold but sooo nice. Kind of like after MN/WI opener and the river is quiet again.

I was there tuesday/wednesday and 20 of the 30 boats north of Everts were sitting over the scour hole playing bumper boats. while myself and the few other boats down a ways from the dam were catching all the nice fish )

Funny how people just assume that if there’s a boat there, they’re catching fish. Too much work to go find fish on their own. My favorite is ice fishing, I should start setting up decoy houses! Never fails, within an hour there’s someone 50yds away with holes drilled.

General question for you Pool 4 guys, I was looking at mapping and it looks like there are significantly less wing dams from the bridge north than I would’ve expected. Is that the case compared to other pools, or is my mapping off?

No, your map is correct. There are some just below the dam, and some short ones (which are out of the water right now) just north of Hay Creek but that is about it.

Which bridge you talking? Red Wing? No, there’s less then a dozen from the bridge in Red Wing North.

I was one of the boats fishing where you were downstream of the scour hole on Wednesday. At least watching the eagles squabble over the floaters is entertaining.

If your heading to the ramp at 6 pm you’re missing the best bite.

The WI Back Channel ramp has some very nice lights!

There’s been a few pigs caught as of late and at least some of them weren’t close to the ever growing swarm at the dam. There are 3 miles of river upstream of the WI Back Channel and 10 miles going down stream to the frozen head of the lake.

Dragging plastics as the sun falls will put a smile on your face. Pitching to rip rap has been working well into the night.

Minnows are $2.99 a scoop at Farm and Fleet for all of you live bait die hards.

With the Parkway Motel and Super 8 starting at $69.00 per night, why not fish for two days?

I hope to see at least some of you river rats at the Bluff’s Saturday! toast

I had a buddy send me a message from Wednesday where he was probably 1/2 mile below the dam, and you could literally see a 8-12″ sauger or eye float by every 15-20 seconds.

If I had nothing better to do, I’d park a pontoon right in the middle of the area at sun-up this Saturday morning with a cooler and some loud tunes, and begin fan casting musky baits in every idiot’s direction within reach.

I often stick up for the DNR when others do not, but this specific issue has become a complete joke. I’m not one for more laws, but 1 piece of regulation significantly lengthening the distance from the dams would save 10s of thousands of fish every year. Start pushing for the change. It’s a move that saves fish without costing hardly anything. No stocking, no research, just a few signs, maybe a buoy or two, and the same level of enforcement that’s currently in-place.

Fair weather fisherman only fish when it’s comfortable out. And no sir I am far from that. I fish when work let’s me have a day or two off. I would rather it be miserable so I don’t see other boats. 0 -20 degrees…. ya got me on that one for sure! applause

Along with needed a new fishing license. )

Tried out Pool 4, put in at Hager across from Mr Sippi. Pretty slow this afternoon, boated one northern and that was it, from 3 to 7. Looked pretty slow out there for most of the other however many hundreds of boats. South wind sucked! Hadn’t fished Pool 4 before and it certainly didn’t make it easy. Tried 12fow, 22fow, current breaks, rip rap, etc. Nothing wanted to bite.

It was slow yesterday on pool 4….wind was brutal. We fished the tournament and scratched out a limit but it took all day.

Didn’t see too many fish boated but someone always finds the fish.
