Pool 4 Report 3-7

Quick pool 4 Report from today. SLOW is the best word to describe the bite. I stuck it out all afternoon and into the early evening just to scrape up 2 walleye just over 15″ for lunch tomorrow. The clarity is still good and the hummingbird read 38 degrees for temp. I was vertical jigging paddle tails and jigs/meat with fish caught on both. A lot of short fish that were short biting. I fished in 18-24 feet of water. Lets hope the warm weather will help the bite.

With only about 20 boats weighing fish out of 67 for the FYB tourney and the few people I spoke with on the water, I’m thinking you were in the top tier of successful fisherman. bow

I’m seeing over 7′ at the Harbor Bar Marina with relatively no flow.

Mike Johnson, same for us last Thursday. Fished from 8-2 and only one sauger and one walleye.

Interesting, I was out with a couple buddies on Friday from 11-5 and had no problem catching a 3 man limit. Nice ones too, kept one 15″ saugeye but the rest were mostly male walleyes 17-19 inches. Threw back a couple 20+ inch egg laden saugers too. I just assumed everyone else was doing the same but I guess I picked the right day to fish. Was planning on going out tomorrow, now I’m wondering if I have to lower my expectations a little.

You’d think with all the melting there would be more water flow?

The flow will pick up, but a lot of the melt is going into saturating the ground. I spoke with a contractor digging for a pole building down the road about frost, and his response was “what frost”? It’s essentially gone here (about 2 miles from Pool 4). Things may be substantially different upstream, but around the actual banks of Pool 4 the snow pack is pretty well gone.

Bass-n-Eyes, that’s a good day! Couple questions. What depths were you fishing? Meat or no meat on the hook?

I will be on P4 tomorrow. First time out in the boat always feels good even if the fishing is slow.

Most came from mid 20 foot depths although we caught them as deep as 35′ and as shallow as 18′. All caught dragging 3/8 oz jig and plastics downstream mostly on current seams although the current was down enough we caught some mid channel too.

Tom Boley was getting em no problem using orange blades. There’s always some guy that gets them figured out. Or just lucks out on a good bite window?

“Getting em no problem” might be a stretch….I was down there the same day and the bite is definitely on the tough side. The scour hole was pretty busy though…. Saw the eagles were eating well.

“Our boat caught around 40, only a couple eaters though”
    “Tons of small saugers”
“Took us a while to find them real deep”
“Bumper boats out there for only small fish”

^Those reports are usually accompanied by an immediate eye roll and a congratulations of stupidity without even asking another question. I’d love to see the no fishing zone below the dam expanded exponentially during the spring.

Disclaimer… clearly not directing the scour hole references at Bass N Eyes. He knows what he’s doing if he caught the nicer fish versus the scour dinks. Kudos on a nice outing

In my defense the limit now is only 4 not six so there is that.

Fished by the dam yesterday (Tuesday). It was slow. Didn’t see anyone get a walleye/sauger. I eked out a 18” and 13” sauger for dinner on a blade bait. Snagged 3 tiny, young of the year, saugers.

I watched that episode last night. Those blades he was using looked pretty cool.

He probably caught a half dozen all day – sounds like the flow needs to come up and the water needs to dirty a bit for the bite to pickup. This rain outta help.
