Those big saugers are just starting to show up back in the system. Everyone IS allowed to keep them but why do so? But They taste like mud and there’s plenty of better tasting smaller ones to keep. So when these fish keep being kept and those fat saugs disappear again everyone will wonder where they went. Keep what u want but don’t whine when they’re gone

    Selective harvest?

I love how someone is nice enough to post the pictures everyone looks to see, then the negative comments follow follow from a few. Legal fish someone made a decision to keep. My two cents, mind your own business. Nothing nice to say, just move on and post nothing. This sounds like the whining seen on Lake Link, and it has pushed many of the best posters away to other sites, like here to IDO. Don’t wreck this site with the same crap.

Looks like yours is the only negative comment. Technically every sauger is legal to keep within the daily bag limits – That doesn’t mean they should be kept. Conscious conservation goes along way.

    LOL Chuck thank you.

FYI if your fish are tasting muddy (no matter what size) clean the red from between the skin and the flesh off and take out the lateral line. Personal experience from an 8 pound walleye.

It is a bit funny when I go to one thread and read how slow this site is and then come to this thread and and listen to the above.

When someone is holding a large cat or sturgeon by the gills, I’ve learned the hard way that a pm to them is much more effective then blasting them in a public forum. Most of the time I get a “thank you, I had no idea” type of reply.

“Brow beating” just doesn’t accomplish what it’s intended to do beside drive reports down.

I’m sure if the saugers and walleyes would be dormant the season would be closed on them as well. Apples to oranges sunshine.

He who catches it can do whatever they want with it (according to the law of course…). Shame on those that judge…RR

For those of you that are criticizing keeping a 20″ sauger: don’t you think we outdoorsmen get enough crap about our sport from non-outdoors people? Why give a guy crap that shares the same love of fishing as you do for keeping a fish that is legal within his rights of the license he purchased?

I’d think way more damage is done to the spawning population by those that fish the scour hole in the spring and throw back 100s of 10-12 inch fish.

Lastly, if you’re really concerned. Put down a camera one day and you’ll be amazed. I think you’ll be less concerned about over harvest.

Sidenote: I’m specifically speaking to pool 4, on other bodies of water this may be a true concern. DNR has proved the growth rate of those fish is much higher and thus we need not be as concerned with the amounts of fish being pulled out.

To end on a positive note, the bite has been outstanding for me last two weekends. 40+ fish days each time down. All on plastics.

Maybe the guy only fishes pool 4 once a year and wants to keep his LEGAL catch. Find something better to complain about..if you don’t have any read the newspaper or turn on the news. This slammin fellow fisherman because of keeping his catch has got to stop!! Get over it guys!!

Without the critical posts, you would never get the constructive posts like Transam’s selective harvest right after. If the criticism holds weight it will stick, but if not it might lead to some constructive debate on what is or isn’t right.

If you post some pics and are offended by others comments, grow some thicker skin.

I’m sure the guy who said we might want to start releasing some of these 50″ muskies decades ago, was called an a$$hole too.

BTW, that is a sweet looking sauger to the OP. Wish it got a better angle shot, bigguns indeed. woot

Finally got out after a 2 month break. We did pretty good today. 11 for two guys, but a few were on the small side. Thanks Ski for the tips! Tried about five spots before we started catching anything. Still some current out there. Dragging plastic was key. Nothing on minnows. A great day to be out.
    BTW- Chartreuse Pepper…..

And then we caught enough for a double limit anchored up and feeding them nothing but fathead minnows.

There’s a stigma to keeping ‘decent sized fish’ now more than ever due to the debacle at Millacs and other lakes.

The truth is, the river is a totally different ecosystem than any lake. Millions of spawning fish with billions of eggs in ideal current and rocks = ultra high success rate for the spawn.

You simply don’t get this in a lake.

If you disagree with the legal limit size and or number, work with the DNR to get them changed. Kinda like BK what did with cats and sturgeon. Ripping on fellow anglers is pointless.
