Yes the Corp and the Lake Pepin Legacy Alliance have been holding meetings for over a year or more. So long I can’t recall when it started.
Although the report paints a beautiful picture and a win win for everyone, with every change some species will do better and others will suffer.
Birds will have more places to rest as the migrate North and South for certain. The long term effects on fish is a little more sketchy. They will claim a 3% increase in biomass in the Weaver bottoms after the similar project which I would assume is true. I would like to know how that increase is doing today. There’s always a boom after dredging slack water areas. How long it last is another question.
Then comes the cut known as Katrina. I’m not talking about the tourneys that were won there, I’m talking about the walleye and catfish spawning in that area.
With the WI DNR’s blessing, the Corp could 1) Close Katrina off completely. 2) Use it for a path to move dredge material. This would mean dredging it out, making it wider, then when finished rip rapping it’s banks and divert some of the flow. 3) do nothing.
After saying all of that, IMHO the islands are a good thing but all dependent on how the people that are much smarter then me lay them out and which species gets it in the shorts.
