pool 4 flow lowered

I have heard that the flow rate has been reduced at Red Wing. I’m guessing that it will have a negative effect on the P4 bite. What say you resident experts?
    Thanks

I’m showing a consistent flow from 9:00am this morning through 3:30pm today? It also looks like about a ~1,000kcfs jump before that time span in about 24 hours?

I’m no resident expert. Resident, maybe. Expert, no. My guess would be that a little flow would help the bite – or help congregate the fish more.

Its not a real serious flow rate right now. Buckbadger is right with having more flow equating to a better bite.

I can’t imagine the Corps holding water back unless there is some ice-related issues somewhere or a maintenance thing needing lower flow rates. BK can find out.

More flow will always help…..when it’s low like this the fish really seem to scatter. I don’t think the corp is doing anything to slow it down but I could be wrong.

When it’s slow like this you need to constantly move and watch your electronics closely. We even used the camera last time to make sure we were on top of walleye. Picked up a few, the pod moved, and the bite died.

I don’t know. 3 outings and I’m over 100 fish. Saturday, Sunday, yesterday. But the walleye fishermen still look bored as a goard.

I do believe flow is down but velocity is not.

I assumed he was fishing walleye but maybe you can convert him!

Quick question – I assume my Musky rod with some sort of floro or mono leader would work for the kitties or sturgeon? Might have to make sure I get that in the boat next time out.

A good start would be to just go give it a try. If you want to actually invest in catching catfish I can recommend a setup that is top notch for many reasons.

    .
I’ve been fishing main channel and certainly noticing the increase.

PM me with a suggestion or post here if you want. Also open to buying used if you had gear you don’t use as much anymore.

Huntnfish sorry for yourself derailing your thread with catfish. My input walleye observations in the last week while velocity has increased and dirtied the water is that I’m seeing less concentrations and more fish all over. All species are moving from their spots a week ago. I’d be thinking about fishing prime walleye locations as they’ll be inhabiting a small current break here, there, and everywhere.

With walleye and any fish frankly you gotta find the flow that they desire. That flow can be found in a small spot big enough for a fish or two, or much larger and inhabited by numbers. You catch your target species always try to figure out what kind of flow it was in and you’ll find fish in similar flow and feeding locations.

In the past week I quit bringing my camera along. Drop that camera to the bottom and it has been DIRTY.

Take those conditions observations for what their worth.

There is more power on the catfish side ) and since I’m realizing I can pound the crap outta them 12 months a year now is a good time to think different eh.

    Medium 7’6″ rippin lips rod
30 pound big game (solar preferred)
Baitcaster with smooth drag and up to 11-12# drag. I’m using Catmaxx now, but will be using Shimano Cardiff or corvalus.
I listen to Brad Durick and got the rod, never looked back. I had to teach myself to use the mono as it just flat out puts more channels in the boat. Catfish, lethargic or aggressive will often get hooked outside the mouth in soft tissue. If you want to lose them half way to the boat or sooner. Use braid. The action of this setup keeps fish ON. The action of this setup hooks lethargic biting fish best as they will peck and taste the bait for up to several minutes before committing to bending over the rod. They’ll continue chewing better with this setup.
I was a really hard one to switch to mono but the more I learned about catfish and started hooking up with bigger and bigger fish the more losing big fish had to cease!

Last night I was incredibly frustrated with fish pulling off after a Good rod bend. Two things I needed to accept. A few of those fish literally just let go, they can clamp down on a hook and not get hooked. The rest were skin hooked and we were fishing in heavy enough current that I’m running the kicker and trolling motor to hold position so tension is high and if you pulled on them any less you wouldn’t land them. So some loss is to be expected and just brush it off.
    Good luck!
Read Brad Duricks books. They’ll teach you a lot about eyes too. Lateral movement and metabolism is something I apply to every species fishing strategy every day on the water. He’s got the answers

The flow will be increasing each day as the temps climb above freezing and hopefully fall below freezing each night

The GREAT FLUSH of 2018 has started in baby steps.

PS Brad Duricks book is easily converted by crossing out cats and replacing that with walleyes.

I’m going to get the book – I have some travel the next few weeks so this will give me something to do on the plane.

Surprising about mono versus braid but it makes sense the way you explain it.

I’ve fished channels during cold water quite a bit in the north metro. Mainly from shore. While we don’t have the size Fishblood is getting they seem to have similar patterns.

I’ve always switched to octu hooks in cold water. When they are nibbling on it I’ll set the hook on em and have had better success doing that than letting them chew on it hoping they turn for a circle. My 2 cents.
