Hello, I am Tyler Stundahl and I am wondering where I can fish for big bass for this weekend’s tournament we are having since I really want to win and prove to my friends that I am a good fisherman, if anyone have any suggestions especially for lake Pepin I would really appreciate it.

PS: if James Holst is reading this my Dad is wondering if you remember him he worked with you at Crenlo and his name is Tim Stundahl

After fishing walleye tourneys for years, the one thing that will always ring true. You cannot put in too much time pre-fishing. The more time on water, the better you are likely to finish.

Also, would you rather be told where to fish and win? Or figure it out yourself? My guess is you will get a lot more satisfaction out of doing it on your own or working with a small, trusted group of friends.

Welcome to IDO and Good Luck!

Tyler I’m no expert but some high level advice I have is the main lake shoreline has a lot of rip rap area that will hold smallmouths. That is going to be the easiest approach if you are new to Pepin. Below the lake in the river the water will be high so the backwaters will be navigable and you should find largemouth where there are weeds. The backwaters are a maze though so take it slow if you’re a first timer. Below the lake there are many wingdams on the main river that hold bass but the current will make many unfishable. You’d want to look for wingdams out of the current.

Not a bass guy but if I was to target them, here are places high on my list:

    Baypoint park
    5th cut Wisconsin channel
    Up the Vermillion
    Sloughs off the dyke road
    Pepin marina
    LC marina
    West Newton

On Pepin it would be hit or miss is my guess. In past years we have caught some nicer bass popping tube jigs around sandy points but that was lower water years. Rip rap is always a good place to target bass and other species.
