Tried Pool 4 yesterday, mostly toward dam but not exclusively. Lots of boats out.

Was hoping someone more skilled than I would post about the great luck they had, but so far nothing. So…pretty slow for me. A couple small walleye, none keepable. Water temp was about 51. Still relatively muddy in the water, too. Most of the boats I saw were clustered up by the dam area. I didn’t try to get real close so can’t really say if they were having much luck.

I tried primarily jig/minnow and some plastics. Tries fast, medium and slow presentation – mostly slow. And….well, it was slow.

Good luck guys. Hope others post about their success!

Oh, and just a reminder to keep your eye out for debris. There was a big stump floating up by the dam for awhile yesterday that was a bit hard to see and could have done some serious damage.

I had the MarCum underwater camera out yesterday Shocks.

The center of the dam area from the end of the scour hole down to the 3rd wing dam was void of any scaly fish. There were few on the clam beds and between the last two wing dams.

I didn’t want to get too close to the anchored boats on the WI side so I didn’t look in that area but my guess is they were catching some out of the deep water.

I heard (but didn’t see) one boat that did real well pitching to the shore with black hair jigs.

Thanks, BK. Appreciate the tips. I did catch one small channel cat and thought of you!

I was guessing the herd up by the dam on the Wis side was having better luck but I wasn’t about to try and squeeze in up there lest I end up scratching a shiny boat or something.

It was really slow yesterday for me too. I fished by the dam to start with nothing going. I did see one maybe 9″ sauger caught and they kept it. ??? I moved from spot to spot down river. I tried jigs with plastics, hair jigs, blade baits, ripping raps, jigging raps, and cranks. I am going to wait a few weeks before I head back and wait for colder water. That is unless I hear the bite has picked up grin

I don’t think the fish are up in the normal numbers yet going by what I saw on the camera.

There were a few locations tossed around in the bait shop of Eagles Nest and Goose Lake.

Good tip on the debris, we watched a large log float past us on Saturday, at least 25′ long and 8-10″ diameter.

It is never good fishing when the river is on the rise and dirty, wait till stabilizes, clears up and water temp drops.

Dont be afraid to get right in the mix with those fiberglass boats they barely ever hurt a tin boat ! whistling

    Head south further ! waytogo

I was out yesterday, club tournament, took 3rd and we only scored 3 fish. We were up at the dam at the end of the day. Biggest fish we caught was on the Minnesota side came on a blade bait. Other fish were caught on blades, plastics, and trolling cranks. I ended up bringing 4 fish home. I thought about tossing hair but I decided losing 2 blade baits and 2 ripping raps sounded like more fun haha

11/4 – Up by the dam anchored was the theme of the day. Blades and spoons easily out fished jig and minnow. Plenty of fish being caught with some keepers thrown in. Water temp was 53 and up a couple of feet.

11/5/2015 Wife and I and Marty Hahn (our guide) enjoyed a great trip on P4 (Red Wing) area. Limit (12) of Walleye/Sauger (15″ – 19″) fishing in 14 – 22 fow with a jigging spoon. Plastics and minnows were no good. Water was pretty warm and current was about normal. We then moved on to Crappie, caught 7 nice (11 – 12.5″) ones in 12 fow using hair jigs before the weather turned and we headed back to the dock. Marty, the guide, put us on the fish early and kept us there for 5 hours or so. Great way to spend a windy, cool fall day.

What size hair jigs did you get the crappies on and how were you fishing them?

Glad to see it pick up. Was out there like others here on Nov 1st.

Caught nothing. Saw plenty of surface action at the wing dams but couldn’t get a bite. Saw a few sheepshead (or something white) jump a few times.

If i head out again on Sunday. Is the best fishing by the dam or on the Minnesota side by the lock?

New guy question too. Where is the best spot to catch fish on the wing dam. On the upstream or downstream of the wingdam?

    Thanks all in advance.

11/8/2015. Crawdaddy, Dustin, Martin. Only fished the WI side for Saugeyes, used several different jigging spoons, mostly dark and bouncing off the bottom but caught largest fish trolling Raps in 12 – 18 fow. Fished WI channel for crappie, past the new landing, using plane hair jigs and beetle spins, fished deep and slow. If no fish in the first 10 or 15 casts we moved. That’s the advantage of having Marty the guide, normally I would stay and fish for an hour and get nothing and then move. Marty just went to a new spot.

Good luck to all, I’ll be back there again with Marty, money well spent, when the big chew starts.

Most of you know the guide, Marty Hahn, but I would absolutely second the compliment from the above post….besides being a great guy, he is a true teacher and it is money very well spent…
