Well, after striking out Sunday I took a half day and a buddy and I fished same basic area again yesterday (Wednesday) afternoon. From Red Wing north. As usual, the weather forecast was a bit off. Instead of 5 to 15 mph, we were battling 20 to 25 mph winds or more. That was fun. But we stuck to it. In 5 hours of fishing caught 2 northern, 1 12″ crappie, a small sauger, and…2 twin 22″ walleye (those two in about a 5 minute span). All on jig and minnow, and pretty shallow. Water temp was about 56 degrees.

The weekend looks nice (in theory) so hopefully some guys get out and post some reports. Good luck.

Thanks for the update. That gives me some hope for this weekend. I hope to be out both days, I will report how it goes.

With Saugerama next Saturday reports may be a little scarce. I think the weights on Saturday will tell the story on what the bite is doing. I was hoping for a gradual cool down but this weather isn’t terrible. Sounds like you had a fun afternoon.

It was a lot more fun after we hooked those 2 eyes, that’s for sure.

trolling motor got a work out for sure in all that wind

I spoke with a couple guides.

They reported some eater size or smaller fish showing up at the dam yesterday.

Sounded like these guys were struggling Sun/Tues as well.

The sauger (16″) we got near the dam. Tried pretty hard there, but that was it. Dam seemed to be the most popular location, no surprise I guess. But not real hot for us. Maybe it got better when wind died down.

Heck, I even tried the jigging rap James was just talking up here on IDO but all I caught were some leaves and clam shells. Must be operator error.

Thanks for the post. I appreciate the updates. I will be out with my dad and brother on Saturday. Not sure where we will go. Heck, we might just try crappies.

A friend and I were at Alma this morning and we didn’t hurt the population any but we did catch a few shorts. It didn’t take long for crappies to get our attention and that switch paid dividends. We spoke with a couple CO’s at the landing they said the walleye/sauger anglers were not doing super while the backwater anglers were doing much better with the pannies.

I’d be just as happy with some crappie action. But so far usual spots I’ve had success this time of year for crappie haven’t produced for me. I hope to get out again with my father in 4 or 5 days. Will post again then.
