Yes you are correct its funny how many people I see head that way and don’t know the rules.
Yup, we limited out up there on Saturday with channel catfish(2 of us). Ran up to dam to check it out, but too early for channel cats to be up there. Was one boat pulling walleyes from 50′. Had some delicious catfish nuggest for supper.
Sunday i fished the dam for sturgeon(marked a few saturday), and the one boat that was there Saturday brought another boat. Both yanking eyes from 45-55′ and couldn’t be prouder for it.
I did talk to the boat that spent two days out there and let him know it was out of season; to which his immediate and obviously lying response was “We’re fishing WHite Bass” … All i could say was “well, maybe try the 20′ breakline it might be easier on the walleyes than pulling them from 50′”.
Said individual obviously didn’t care(knew the rules), and they were taking pictures with their prized 14″ walleyes LOL. Some people’s kids. If they weren’t jackwagons, i would’ve put them on a spot with HUGE females in less than 20′, but…NOPE! At least then they wouldn’t be killing them.
I did check a 15′ spot that i though held white bass, put on a small plastic that is obsolete, and i haven’t used in over 10 years. Two walleyes in 10 minutes and i quit that. Yes there were white bass mixed in there, but even though i tried to not catch the eyes, they were hungry…Oh well, catfished a bit instead after that.
To answer the original question, when is the best time, it WAS before February 28 (Upstream of confluence), or after the water has risen and stabilized downstream of confluence…Typically April 1 – April 16(last day of spawn).
Fish hold in the whole pool once water has risen and stabilized. Lower end of pool will see a rush of fish when the water rises, from pool 4.
You’d be wasting your time fishing the confluence at this time. In 5 years, i haven’t seen the confluence worth fishing between December and March. Does hold fish the other months though with few exceptions to that.
