I watch the USGS website for current conditions and have for years. Seems pretty accurate. The consensus seems to be that the big females haven’t really showed up in upper pool 2 yet, but the water temps have been above 48 for a few days now… Anybody have a better understanding of this type of stuff than I and would you be willing to explain some of it? Thanks in advance.

I was out all day on P2….highest temp I found was 46. No females but a really good bite for decent males. Talked to a couple other boats with the same feedback…no females.

P2 was really dirty….I was surprised how low the clarity was.

The big females are there, caught a few from Sunday-Wed.27″-28″and did lose one quite a bit larger near the boat. All caught from the confluence and upriver.Plenty of small fish and lots of nice 17″-20″males.Killing me to miss the past two days but have to do some motorrepairs.

Yeah the water came up quite a bit lately and got dirtier too. I’ve been fishing on shore at hidden falls and have not been doing well at all. Fishing shallow-mid depth slackwater with 1/8 oz jigs with gulp/moxies and casting stickbaits. Last few trips I’ve only caught like 6 walleyes total from 15″-22″. What gives? Also, I’ve only been starting at dark and fishing a little while after. From everything I’ve read pre-spawn/spawn time it’s best to target walleyes AFTER dark. Yet most guys I’ve talked to have done better during the day…

Lol at least you’re honest. I would try either hidden falls park or directly across the river where minnehaha creek flows in. There are other random shore spots all over downstream from there. A Google search should give you more info. As far as baits, can’t go wrong with live bait-minnows or even crawlers. Also jig/plastics and crankbaits will catch plenty of fish. Good luck.

Thanks a lot. Is it better from the creek and up to the dam or better creek and down stream usually?

Lots of factors but I would say from creek and up right now. And no problem.

Glad you’ve had some luck with the bigger fish….everyone I’ve spoken to is still catching males. I haven’t been able to spend a ton of time down there this spring but you must have the baits dialed in.

To AUTO_5: night is the best time in my experience, especially from shore. They’ll move up really shallow right as the sun goes down. I’ve caught them in a foot of water.

Those have been the only days I have fished down there this year.dragging 1/4-3/8 oz thumper jigs with a fathead, bigger fish have been in the current 8-10ft of water with deep and slack water close by,vertical has produced for me but only males.

That’s kinda what I thought and that’s mainly what I’ve been doing. Oh well, I’ll figure it out!

Gentlemen, my guess is that many of the walleyes have spawned. We caught big females at the confluence in early Feb, and some smaller, but still respectable females by the dam 2 weeks ago. Out last Tuesday and caught 2 small males by the dam. Water temp was 49.2 degrees. For what it is worth, a web search told me northern latitude walleyes spawn at 44 – 48 degrees.
As far as the shore fishing, the riprap from the lock to Minnehaha creek is usually a sure bet. It is tough walking and not sure if you can park at the Veterans home.
    Hope this is helpful.

Everybody keeps telling me they have a 43-45 water temp but I go by the usgs site which says it’s been over 49 for quite a while I think. Haven’t looked in a couple days. Would not surprise me in the least mark, and thanks for sharing.

Caught a few walleyes while bass fishing down river this weekend. Looks like at least some have started migrating towards summer spots.
