Wondering what the odds are of the Pool 2 – New Years Day water skiers getting out tomorrow!

No fishing to report here, either

MX1825Posts: 3319January 2, 2022 at 7:34 pm #2086119From Sunday afternoon, January 2, 2022. I wasn’t expecting to see any open open water but I was driving over the 494 bridge so I decided to swing by and take a look.

January 10, 2022 at 11:16 pm #2088718We drove over the Wakota bridge this afternoon. There were a few patches of open water here and there, and a lot of snow covered ice. It looked horrible.

-J.Brings back memories. 2019 on pool 4 with my ski boat. It was only 20° with high winds
February 11, 2022 at 9:49 am #2098697Has anyone checked out the ramps/ice lately? With the lack of snow, the ramps will probably be ready before the water is. It doesnt take many 20 degree plus days to get things moving. We might not be far away from open water!
February 11, 2022 at 10:03 am #2098707I stopped by the 494 access on Wednesday afternoon. There is some open water way out there, and a lot of ice in the way. Somebody walked out and poked a couple of holes through it probably to check ice thickness. No saw marks so they must have given up. The ramp had a fair amount of ice and snow on it but nothing some sand couldn’t fix.

JakePosts: 9February 11, 2022 at 6:16 pm #2098883I live real close to the ramp and had been watching it most of the week, with the wind the last two days it opened up alot but still quite a bit of ice holding under the bridge to the wing dam below the ramp. Anything north of the sunken barge is froze solid with very little to any open water. Hopefully the extended forecast holds true and things start to open up.
February 12, 2022 at 1:30 pm #2099009Just drove over the Wakota bridge. Not much open water down there, a lot less than last Wednesday. Discouraging.

February 12, 2022 at 1:52 pm #2099018Hard to get much melting when the air temps are 40 F COLDER the melting point of ice. I heard it was the coldest January since 2014 and the third coldest in the past 20 years. It hasn’t seemed brutally cold but definitely a lot of cold mornings.
February 12, 2022 at 8:41 pm #2099071Was just a short ice shelf at the landing acouple days ago. Maybe 20′ to cut through.

Right now you could darn near walk to Newport. Come on warmer temps and higher Sun.

We finally have the MNDNR blessing and just need to get this bill through the legislature this year…
Senate File 2767
Sec. 17. Minnesota Statutes 2020, section 97C.315, subdivision 1, is amended to read:
Subdivision 1. Lines. An angler may not use more than one line except:
(1) two lines may be used to take fish through the ice; and(2) the commissioner may, by rule, authorize the use of two lines in areas designated by
the commissioner in Lake Superior.; and(3) two lines may be used in the Minnesota River downstream of the Granite Falls dam
and in the Mississippi River downstream of St. Anthony Falls.dirtywaterPosts: 1627February 15, 2022 at 8:38 am #2099782Some of you reading this might be interested that there’s a pretty good possibility that you might be allowed an extra line on P2 in the near future. “downstream of St. Anthony Falls.” — is that the entirety of the language? Wouldn’t that encompass the pools downstream as well? 3, 4, etc?

Most of 3 and all of 4 are border waters and allowed two lines already.
3RiversPosts: 1102February 15, 2022 at 8:51 am #2099787Yes, everything downstream from the Falls including the small section on 3 between Hastings and Prescott which is always confusing.

Hi Darren!
That’d be real nice!!
Now, if they could adopt that small section of pool 3 into border regsdirtywaterPosts: 1627February 15, 2022 at 3:31 pm #2099970Wouldn’t that encompass the pools downstream as well? 3, 4, etc?

Right, brain fart on my end.
March 2, 2022 at 4:44 pm #2104486Looking out the window of my hospital unit overlooking the Miss on campus, it’s wide open! Not sure what it’s like downstream but there’s just a few feet of ice on the shores.

Where at? I’m not sure of where you’re talking about.
March 3, 2022 at 1:27 pm #2104729Locked up still north of the confluence. But, seems to be breaking apart and MN river is coming loose too.

U of M campus. 94 Bridge basically.
March 5, 2022 at 7:46 pm #2105325These photos of the 494 ramp are from late Friday afternoon, March 4. 2022. There were about 9 trailers in the parking lot, some of them bigger bunk trailers, so guys were getting out. You actually had to launch off the slide of the upstream ramp. There was a pretty good sized ice lip but someone had put some smaller rocks to make a mini “ramp”. The ice on the ramp itself appeared to be about 12″ thick and real solid.
When I drove over the river, I could see some really big chunks floating down the channel.
