I’m a relatively inexperienced fisherman so these numbers probably aren’t going to raise too many eyebrows around here. But I got into a decent bite last night on p2, long-lining a Reef Runner (firetiger, deep little ripper) against the current with my outboard.
First pass, 5 minutes in, I get hit. Never have I seen my rod bend like this! I thought I’d snagged up on a large log at first because the rod wasn’t doing much twitching. I drifted downstream toward the strike and started to ease the tension just a bit, and that’s when he started running all over. The best fight of my fishing life, hands down — I was hoping for a pig walleye but the fight was not walleye-like at all, so wasn’t surprised to find a 26″ sheepie surface into my net. This fish was a fat, slimy mess. Don’t have a scale but I’m guessing 8-10 lb range. People fishing on shore were actually clapping This was an easy PB — an 8 inch upgrade over my previous best drum.
Got right back into the same run again after drifting downstream a bit. 10 minutes later I picked up a small but pretty walleye, maybe 11 inches. Drift down, start again, same exact spot as the small eye the reef runner gets hammered. The initial strike was less intense than the sheepshead but still strong. After a few head shakes it was a pretty typical walleye “fight,” but I could definitely tell it was a nicer fish than the last one. Ended up being 20″ on the nose, which for me was another PB. For those of you laughing at that, I realize that’s no pig, but it didn’t stop me from doing a little victory dance in my boat
I made a few more passes without success and called it a night. I was on the lake all day and then hit the river, about 10 hours in the boat altogether so pretty tuckered out. Well worth it!
