Pool 2 January Thaw Weekend Trip

Anybody planning to get out on Pool 2 this weekend? I haven’t been to the 494 ramp to check things out but with high temperatures of about 40 F predicted for the next several days and lows still above freezing, I think the river should be opening up pretty quickly. If anyone can provide a ramp report, that would be great.

I see the flow is still around 17,000 cfs at St. Paul which is still unusually high for January.

I haven’t been on the river since early December but hopefully I can get out before it gets cold again.

Good luck and go slow as I’m sure there will be some icebergs floating around.

I drove over the bridge this afternoon and there’s still about 100 yards of ice coming off river right (the west bank). I don’t think it’s going to open up any time soon.

November 10th 1975. Sustained northwest winds of 60mph with gusts exceeding 90mph. 20 to 30 foot seas reported near Caribou island. Ship has a slight list but captain McSorley reports, “we are holding our own.”

Checked out 494 and Hidden Falls this morning. Still locked up but ice is looking black. Need some sun and wind to get things moving. Channel opens up nice by the airport. Pretty much ice free shore to shore up there.

Thanks for the update Jon. I think it’s just been too calm during this warm spell to really get the ice melting.

We stopped to check it out yesterday afternoon. Like Jon showed, still quite a bit of ice. There was a boat out in the center of the channel down river near the power line. Wonder where he launched? Lilydale or hidden falls?

Lillydale and Hidden falls are locked in. Not sure where a guy could put in. Maybe lucky enough to have a dock somewhere???

Maybe this weekend? Unless people want to see their Vikings and Packers in the Pro Bowl, not much else happening.
