Poly or metal reel

Hey folks, I’m in the market for new tip ups, I’ve been using my father’s handed down to me and it’s time for retirement. They have metal reels on them but I notice many new tip ups (I like the cross style) have poly reels on them. Is there any advantage to the poly over the metal? My metal ones have lasted probably 40 years…I’m leaning towards the Heritage laker classic 36″ I have to get 7 (NY allows 7 lines in any combo for jigging/tip ups) and mainly fish for bass, pike, walleye. Thanks guys

Whatever you get or if you stick with what you have consider changing the grease.

Man I don’t want to think about ice fishing. But I have mostly poly, and they do break. Not sure how I managed, but I’ve chipped part of the spool off on at least one.

It might be worth checking into rebuilding the ones you have. The only advantage to poly reels is the cost.

Beaver Dam, Beaver Dam, Beaver Dam…

You will leave them to your kids because they will last rest of your life probably.

Metal reels & parts do not chip or warp with age & below freezing temperatures. Plastic can & does. Sloppy molding temperatures can distort parts if not done correctly. Stick to metal.

I have a fleet of old beaver dam tip ups and they are my go to. I do with they had a handle on then for winding back up. But I can live with out it because they are quality
