Pocket Knives

I cannot leave the house without a knife. It isn’t for protection. Once you start carrying a knife, you’ll realize how often you will actually use it in day-to-day activity. I tend to like Kershaw knives. Beware with Kershaw though…They have cheaper Chinese lines AND high quality American lines. I have a half dozen or so of the cheaper Chinese ones, they aren’t bad for the price, but if you want a nice Kershaw, you generally spend upwards of $50+. The Leek and Chive are my favorites. Knife collecting can become an addiction.

I use my pocket knives for everything from opening boxes to bleeding out fish. It hurts me when I use a high end knife to open a cardboard box…There’s no faster way to dull a blade…That’s why more times than not, my Benchmade or Zero Tolerance knives stay at home.

A good sharpener will fix this. Seems a shame to leave a good knife home because you’re afraid of dulling it. To me a dull knife is a sign you’re getting something done.

There’s a lot of hocus-pocus and overcomplicated snake oil solutions when it comes to sharpening knifes. Truth is you need to spend no more than $20 on a sharpening tool and invest 15 minutes in learning how to use it.

There are literally hundreds of ways to get the same knife sharp. Personally, I”m just as apt to use the same set of water stones in my shop that I use to sharpen planes and chisels. Stones were getting knives sharp for 1000 years before anyone ever saw anything with an electrical cord attached to it, so the idea that you have to spend hundreds of dollars on some all-singing-all-dancing WunderTul is bogus.
