I left some room between rows in my small corn plot to plant brassica in. On July 6th I planted it and this is how it looks today.

My son was up at the farm over the weekend and took a picture for me of the brassica. Not a great shot, but it shows the brassica in the foreground, the beans in the background and the 12 rows of corn to the right that divide this 4 acre plot from the alfalfa field. He said the brassica is about 4-6″ tall, beans are about 2′ tall with some weeds but not bad. I am anxious to get up there in 2 weeks and see it for myself.

Got up to the farm over the weekend and got some more fall plots in. The high deer density in our area led to the deer overbrowsing my beans in small plots so I tilled them up and planted rye in them. Also put in roughly 5 acres in rye/ladino clover. I thought we had 2 bags of brassica with, but ended up only having one. We got 50lbs of white ladino clover in, 15/50lb bags of winter rye and the half acre of brassica. It is later than I usually like to plant brassica, but I wanted to get something in the two half acre plots and already had quite a bit of rye in other plots, so needed some variety. Unfortunately only having one bag of brassica I had to leave one plot worked up but not planted. Since I won’t be back to the farm until September 10th I will probably just put winter rye in that plot also.

Yes, next year I have a couple plots that will be set aside for the brassica bender.

The rye/clover I planted August 20th is coming in real nice. Here is a pic of one of the trails I did this on. Also a couple pics of a rye/clover plot I planted last year. I mowed off the rye in july and the clover looks amazing.
