Ploly vs. Steel Plow blade

Got word that the plow setup for our UTV we had ordered is experiencing significant delays, especially on the steel blade we had originally chosen. Right now it looks like the options are to get a poly blade relatively soon or wait on a steel blade which could run to mid-February or later.

I’ve looked some things up online, spoken with the dealer, and talked with some folks I know and this kind of seems like a Ford vs. Chevy, Humminbird vs. Vex comparison. There are some definite advantages to one but then a completely different advantage for the other.

    Anyone have thoughts/recommendations?

Having never had a poly plow my first thought is it would want to ride over the snow. Not enough weight to keep it down? I dunno.

are you only pushing snow/ice or will you use it for dirt/rock work in the summer too ? If only snow removal, Poly is fine, just make sure you keep the wear pads and steel blade in good shape.

I just put a KFI poly plow on my Ranger a couple weeks ago and I am really happy with it so far. It hasn’t plowed more than about 6” each time so far though. It still is a steel frame and is supposedly close to as heavy as the steel blade KFI offers but the poly blade is taller.

Never had a poly plow on an atv. I had several poly plows on trucks for commercial plowing. The advantages are wet snow doesn’t freeze to it, and no rusting. On Western brand truck plows the poly plow is a little heavier. More steel needed in the frame to support the poly blade. I would never go back to all steel if it was me. My.02

Primarily for moving snow, if anything is done in the summer it’d just be very light work.

I did ask the guy on the phone some advantages vs. disadvantages to each. One thing he mentioned was that it would be possible for a poly to crack. I thought ok, that sounds horrible, how likely is that? He said he’d run plenty of poly before and never had it happen, so maybe that’s unlikely.

And Dutch I’ve discussed that with some people too as I’ve heard that concern. My hope and plan is to get after snow early and often so I’m not putting too much stress on it anyway instead of waiting for an entire 12-plus inches to fall.

I have had the Can Am Flex poly plow on my Defender for about a year now. Saw fairly heavy use last winter and moderate use this year. This one is a full poly blade with just a steel wear edge. It works great and the lack of weight is a non-factor. I have been pleasantly surprised with how much snow it can push. But, the fact that it is solid poly leaves a bit to be desired when it comes to durability. Throughout last year, the steel wear edge began bending anytime I’d hit harder snow. I ended up replacing the wear edge with a heavier one and also added angle iron to the backside to stiffen it up. So far so good this year and I don’t anticipate any more issues with it. All that being said, it looks like Can-Am no longer offers the poly plow option. I think poly is just fine as long as whichever one you chose has a good steel framework backing it up. I’ve heard good things about the KFI plows.

For the poly vs steel plows I have looked at for sxs the poly has been slightly heavier than the steel plows. Denali and kfi would be my top choice unless a guy wants to spend alot of money.

I would take the poly and not have any second thoughts.

I run a Western Pro-Plow 8’ Poly blade on my plow truck and have never had any issues. I have a KFI poly on my 4 wheeler and haven’t had any issues there either. I like the poly blades better because I feel like the have a bit of forgiveness to them. I’ve hit curbs and uneven pavement too many times to admit and the blade is still good to go.

Not sure of the brand but this is my plow. Poly. Stays at my Dads, and his driveway is gravel and 7/10 of 1 mile with some small hills. It does a fantastic job. Plow is 4 years old and heavy. No issues with it riding over snow. I would buy another one tomorrow with no second thoughts.
