I am going snaring for snowshoe hares soon. I want to know everything about snaring them. I haven’t caught anything (except for a dog) in 3 years. I have had serval misses last year. Do I need to boil the snares to get the human scent off? To I need to put them in with baking soda to get the shine off? How far of the ground should the snare be? Help.

I don’t know a thing about trapping but I’d love to hear the story about the dog.

I don’t trap much anymore and haven’t targeted hares since I was a boy. For hares I wouldn’t be concerned too much about scent. Hang your snares outside for a couple weeks. I like hanging them in a pine tree for some cover scent.
Are you using cable or wire? You’ll want the smallest cable available. (1/32″ or so) Real thin wire (18-20ga I think) also works. Use a 3-4″ loop and have the bottom of the loop 1-2″ above the ground.
Find fresh tracks/ sign. Follow the hares trail and find a narrow pinch point where they’re going through brush or tall grass and set there.

Its been 40 years or so since I last Snared and hares or rabbits. I use to use sticks to help funnel the hares to the snare. Even on a well wore path of brush pile entry it easy for the hare to miss the loop. With a funnel they almost have to place their head into the loop. I use to just leave my snares in a bucket with some pine needles to cover scent
