If we are just fishing the Minnesota side we usually bring live bait. If we are doing both on the lake or the river it’s 100% b fish n products. Not the most durable things but they flat out catch fish. One nice thing about the river vs a lake is it requires way less effort to work the bait, the current pretty much does everything for you.

We pretty much exclusively use plastics. Some years we get a few bags of frozen shiners but most years is 100 percent plastics.
Moxies, pulser, eye candy, kietech is just a handful i use. I throw paddle tails and twist tails. If not I’m throwing blades and lip less. Last year I lost my last large size lip less clacking rap, that one caught more fish then any others.

As for colors. I have 3 big tubs of plastics in my boat and fly through colors. But I always go to orange, chartreuse, fire cracker, white, pearl, black and so on. Some days are different then others and I keep alot of plastics in my boat.
Some days we are throwing big ole mega drafts even. And some days are a 3 inch twister tail.

Big variety of plastics for my boat to. White or Pink and white Pulsars are always not to far away. From there bring a few other colors, styles and sizes of plastics. Dont overlook scented plastics to. Think it would be tough to find one they won’t hit.

With that getting them to work can be a more challenging than finding the right plastic. You can very easily over work them. Most of the time hits cone when you are holding the bait still.

Donnie covers colors and techniques is this video a bit.

Last year on my last day up there it was bright blue bird skies.
I switched to a firecracker chartreuse pulse R and an immediate positive response.
Before then I was mostly using white or white/pink.
The first 2 days I mainly used a 1/4 oz jig as well.
On the last day it seamed like there was just a little bit more flow. I switched to a 3/8 oz when I went to the firecracker/ chartreuse pulse R.

Tail depends on action/current, usually using paddle tails, flukes or ringworm/twister tails are all in rotation. White, chartreuse, chartreuse orange core are probably my top 3 colors. I still like big rainbow minnows best, but usually have everyone in the boat trying something different until a pattern emerges.
