I recently started using plastics and found them to be very successful for crappies but not Gills. So i was wondering what brand of plastcs would be good for Gills

    Thanks

Little Atom Micro Nuggie! I start with them 95% of the time for either gills or crappies and rarely have to change. If you’re on bigger agressive fish the regular nuggies can work well. If finicky, sometimes I use their Wedgie, often pinching it in about 1/2 and using just a little bit of the thin tail.

If they are super, super finicky to the point of having to basically dead stick, I might go to using live bait, but that happens very, very rarely. The little Atom baits are anise scented and work well for me.

That said, I have given them to others who seem to have less luck with them. I think plastic generall requires a little more constant movement to trigger a strike. Guys that tend to hop a jig and then hold it still seem to struggle more with plastics.

I like the shrimpo tails from CJ&S, also triger X makes some that work well too. The 1.5″ are little long for my prefence so I shorten them

I use a lot of Trigger X Mustache worms, and Wax tails if I am targeting specifically gills. I will normally start with red, black or natural and then go from there depending on the fishes response. I have found gills to get very picky if you are using horizontal jig like a Tubby jig and the body of the plastic is not right up against the head, lots of times they won’t eat it. Normally if I miss a fish and I and I have other fish come look at the jig but not touch it I will pull it up and check it. Crappies will do the same but not as often as the gills tend to.

Check out the company Panfish Plastics. They have a variety of quality plastics that work well for Gills. My favorite is the “Chigger fry” Profile in White, natural green, red, brown, and black. It’s a great bug profile with a small finess tail on the back. Awesome scent too.

I’ll echo Glenn-d on the domination spike, the detail is almost too much. I’ve also had good luck on the GoJo by J&S custom jigs, and the waterbug by B-Y baits. Most of the time red works best, white for crappies but other colors work too, just depends on their mood.

Red Trigger X mustache worms have worked pretty well for me when not using waxies or Raps.

How are you rigging the mustache worms

The second pic is how I normaly rig it and the first is what I do if the gils are not taking the jig all the way in when they bite. The mustache worm is really versatile and you can rig it a lot of different ways.

I was introduced to B-Y Baits and the owners last year. Been using their plastics exclusively, ever since. Great baits, guys, prices and product line. I’m not sponsored by B-Y in any way. The only thing I benefit from talking about their product line is: hearing of, seeing and watching others success using the line of B-Y products.
